Subject: IIsi and Monitor Adapters
From: David Yeargin

I have a Mac IIsi that I've used only with the grayscale Apple Portrait Monitor, and want to set it up with a color monitor. Will I be able to get 256 colors with a new 14 inch model (i.e. Apple or NEC)? Am I correct in my understanding that these newer monitors require an adapter to connect to the IIsi?

A new monitor may require an adaptor if it does not have an Apple DB15 plug on it similar to the one on your current monitor.

Be aware that you also will need an adapter to connect a IIsi to any multisync monitor, and this has nothing to do with plug configuration.

Griffin Technology, http://www.nashville.net/~griffin makes such an adapter and they say, "The Mac Sync II Series Adapter was designed to allow all Mac and PC multisync monitors including the Apple Multiple Scan 14 and 15 to be used with the II series built in video or video cards." I can't tell you excactly what this adapter does, but I can tell you from experience that without it the Apple Multi-Sync 14" monitor will not display anything on the IIsi. I paid $20 for mine through the User Group store. You can also buy direct from Griffin.

Is there a list such as this for PowerBooks??

If so, would someone send me an address.

68000 macs are supported up to System 7.5.5. The last freely distributed System 7.0* (DD floppies) and 7.0.1*:

minimum requirements for the net
--------------------------------
MacPlus, 4 MB RAM, 20 MB harddisk, (2400-)14400 modem, System 7.0* and MacTCP 2.0.6 are the practical minimum requirements for PPP connections. Only MacPPP 2.0.1 currently works on 68000 macs.

MacTCP is included in System 7.5. Apple dealers sell it but a cheaper and better way is to buy "The Internet Starter Kit for Macintosh" (Adam Engst, Hayden Books) book where MacTCP, among other utilities, is included. MacTCP 2.0.x to 2.0.6 updaters:

ftp://ftp.support.apple.com//pub/apple_sw_updates/US/mac/Networking-Communications/Other_N-C/MacTCP 2.0.6 Update.hqx

ftp://ftp.funet.fi//pub/mac/info-mac/comm/inet/conn/mactcp-206-updt.hqx

MacPPP 2.0.1:

ftp://ftp.funet.fi//pub/mac/info-mac/comm/inet/conn/mac-ppp-201.hqx

On 68000 macs telnet-, ftp-, mail-, and news-apps like NCSA Telnet, Fetch, Anarchie 1.6.0, Eudora, and NewsWatcher work fine. With NCSA Telnet you can't use control-keys which MacPlus lacks (in ZTerm you can use command instead of control). For www NCSA Mosaic 1.0.3 and MacWeb 1.00A3.2 work; NCSA Mosaic can display in-line graphics but with MacWeb (on 68000 macs) you must use GIFConverter as a helper (click and hold on an image icon, choose "Retrieve to Disk" from the pop-up menu and view with GIFConverter). Apps and extensions requiring color or better processor (Netscape Navigator, JPEGView, QuickTime etc) don't work on low-end macs like the Plus.

ftp://ftp.funet.fi//pub/mac/info-mac/comm/inet/ncsa-telnet-27b4.hqx

ftp://ftp.funet.fi//pub/mac/info-mac/comm/inet/fetch-301.hqx

ftp://ftp.funet.fi//pub/mac/info-mac/comm/inet/mail/edr/eudora-light-155.hqx

ftp://ftp.funet.fi//pub/mac/info-mac/comm/inet/newswatcher-212.hqx

Of www browsers NCSA Mosaic 1.0.3 and MacWeb 1.00A3.2 work also on low-end 68000 B&W; macs (Plus, SE, Portable, Classic, PB100). MacWeb 1.00A3.2 works better than 1.1.1 E which crashes when saving prefs. NCSA Mosaic can also display in-line graphics but with MacWeb (on 68000 macs) you must use GIFConverter as a helper (click and hold on an image icon, choose "Retrieve to Disk" from the pop-up menu and view with GIFConverter).

ftp://ftp.support.apple.com//pub/apple_sw_updates/US/mac/util/ResEdit_2.1.3.hqx

With only 1 MB RAM, floppy drive(s) and System 6 you can connect via a terminal emulator like ZTerm and use unix apps like pine, tin, ftp, ncftp, sz, rz, and lynx for mail, news, file transfer and www. With ZTerm you can use command-key instead of control when using MacPlus.

ftp://ftp.funet.fi//pub/mac/info-mac/comm/term/zterm-10b3.hqx

If you really want to use System 6 and connect via PPP I've heard that following software versions might work: System 6.0.5-6.0.8, MacTCP 2.0.6, MacPPP 2.0.1, Eudora 1.3.1, NewsWatcher 2.0d13m01, Internews 1.1, Fetch 3.0.1 (older versions may use less memory), Valuefax 2.0.9. However, 68000 macs like MacPlus don't seem to make it with System 6 (Config PPP gives error opening prefs).

ftp://ftp.qualcomm.com//quest/mac/eudora/1.3/eudora131.hqx

ftp://ftp.brown.edu/pub/mac/NewsWatcher/NewsWatcher_2.0d13m01.sea.hqx

If you need to save disk space unfatten the apps with Strip Fat, for example:

ftp://ftp.funet.fi//pub/mac/info-mac/cfg/strip-fat.hqx

Use a local info-mac mirror, if possible:

ftp://ftp.funet.fi//pub/mac/info-mac/help/mirror-list.txt

ftp://mirrors.aol.com//pub/info-mac/help/mirror-list.txt

I have a Color Classic as well as a PM7500. I would like to speed up the CC by some reliable means. Shortly after the CC was introduced (in 92 or 93) I read in a comp mag that a 68040 version of the CC was made for Japan only.

Alex,

just read an ad in 'MacUser' Dec. issue (US): Sonnet promotes a PDS-Based card for the Color Classic with a 68040 CPU running at 25 MHz with or without FPU ($199.- / 299.-). That's what I've been waiting for my CC, too ;-)

Subject: Re: PowerBook 520
From: Andre Lex

Hello,

as a late but proud owner of a 520 since september this year I had the same questions when buying my PowerBook:

Does anyone know if it's possible to accelerate this machine with a clock-chipping accelerator?

No, never heard about that.

Or is it possible to upgrade it to PPC status with either an LC-PDS accel, or a motherboard transplant?

Yes. Apple did and Newer still does offer upgrades. The top model is a recently anncounced 160MHz 603-PPC. As I know, the original CPU is on a daughter card and will be exchanged, no hassle with the motherboard or the PDS.

My next trick will be to locate a 240V charger for it 8-/ 110V of course coming from America.

Where's the trick? My 520 has an international Power Adapter, a standard Apple issue. You can use it everywhere, the only thing you have to change eventually will be the power cord for the wall plug. External charging devices, as from VST for ex., are normally using the 520's adapter for power supply. Check the description at the bottom of your devices. I can't imagine that PBs sold in the US have a 110V-only limitation.

Likely, the unit you're thinking of is the Color Classic II. It was released in October of 1993 (8 months after the Feb. release of the Color Classic), and was available only in Japan. It -did not- have a 68040 processor though. It was a 68030 @ 33MHz, and had a 32-bit wide datapath. Compared to the original Color Classic (16MHz, 16-bit datapath) it -would- be about four times faster.

From GMcneiL99:
While looking thru a catalog of CD Rom Games for my kids I came across one which stated that it required an LC 550 Mac. I have a Mac IIsi. Is the IIsi compatible with software which specifies that it is for the LC 550?

Hmmm, kind of a tough call. While they both run a 68030 processor and 512 bit level 1 cache, the IIsi runs @ 20MHz while the LC 550 runs 33MHz (a somewhat significant speed difference). It's very likely the game in question willrun okay, though it's difficult to presume how the speed difference will affect it.

From Maurice Lee:
I have a Mac Classic and a Mac SE, one of which I would like to upgrade with an accelerator. I wouldlike to know which one is a better candidate for such an upgrade and why.

Well, -if- the SE has the 1.44meg Superdrive, that would be my vote. It has a PDS slot (granted, SE PDS cards will be difficult to find, at least it has one, though), and works better with modems; the SE supports hardware handshaking on both input & output; the Classic, only on output, not input.

I have called Apple on this several times, but was unable to reach anyone who had even heard of a 68040 color classic.

Apple sold a very sweet machine here in Japan known as the Color Classic II. It had a fast '030 (33mHz) and was extremely popular. I have one (now it is my wife's actually) and always thought it would have been a great model for the US.

The '040 model you are thinking of, I believe, would be the Performa 588. (was that sold in the US?) It was a one piece Mac, quite a bit larger than a CC II, and had a very capable '040. The only problem was that it had a overly curved monitor.

Have you checked out the GURU database of Mac models? It is available at all the usual sites, and has loads of info on the part no.'s for the various models. I don't think the l/b from a 588 could be swapped into a CC chasis, but if you can find a CC II l/b for a reasonable price you will have a snappy little Mac!

good luck,

kevin c.

There was a Color Classic II released in Japan. It wasn't a 68040 though, it was a 33MHz 68030 with 32-bit datapath. Single 72-pin SIMM socket. Significantly faster than the Color Classic but the boards are unavailable, I've even asked penpals in Japan to look for 'em for me.. no banana.

Subject: MacInTalk
From: Michael Blazer

I was trying to get my kids' old Portable (running system 6.0.8) to talk to her, and I can't find MacInTalk anywhere! What happened to it?

I seem to remember that the original MacInTalk was replaced with Text-to-Speech, which had different versions of MacInTalk for different machines. I can't remember if any version could run on a 68000 machine with system 6; but of course the original MacInTalk could.

I just spent an hour searching with Anarchie and Alta Vista and looking through Apple's web sites, and I can't find any version of MacInTalk or Text-to-Speech. Can anyone help?
