Subject: Where can we find Accelerators, etc. for Classics, IIsi, IIci
From: Bo Schnick

Currently, I know of the Performer, PerformerPro and Multispeed accelerators form Micromac Tech, the SE accelerator from Brainstorm, the Allegro accelerator from Sonnet Tech, and the Newlife accelerator. Thanks.

However, my 25MHZ '030 accelerated Classic works well, so either way you can probably get a good result. I use the Allegro from Sonnet, which can address up to 16MB (important these says) with the assistance of the no-longer-available software Compact Virtual 3.0 by Connectix. Sonnet probably doesn't have much of these Classic accelerators left, so if you delay, you may not have a choice of which machine to accelerate anyway.

Does anyone have any further info on sources of info for?:

1. Upgrades for the Classic
2. accelerators for the Classic
3. Compact Virtual 3.0 from Connectrix
4. MicroMac Tech. stuff and address, phone number, URL
5. Brainsorm - ? address, phone number
6. NewLife- ? address, phone number
7. Sun (is it re-marketing or marketing?)phone number, what they sell
8. upgrades, accelerators, graphics cards for the IIsi & IIci
9. experiences with dealings with above companies, who's hot, who's not

Thanks in advance for any information.

Bo

When I first got this MacPlus a couple of weeks ago, the screen had a little trouble coming on. I thought there might be a short or something. It has now completely stopped working. When I turn the computer on , the screen does nothing. What could be the problem?????Thanks for the input

Rex,

I had the same problem once on an old MacPlus. I took into my local dealer and they said it was the cold solder joint. They fixed it for me, but then about 6 months later it went out again. They said it would cost too much to fix, so I didn't do anything with it. That might be the problem, at least it was for me. I hope this helps.

Oops! I should have made clear that the PC drive is a 5.25 *floppy* drive. It connects to the Mac II with a card in the NuBus slot. What I need to know is this: is there an adapter to connect the card I have to the weird slot on the IIsi. Sorry I didn't make it clearer.

Subject: Re: MacInTalk
From: Michael Blazer

Thanks to all who helped in my search for the old version of MacInTalk. However, shortly after posting my pathetic cry for help, I did find it on Apple's web site. It was hidden away in the PlainTalk 1.4.1 folder. (I had already looked in the PlainTalk 1.2.1 and 1.3 folders in vain, and I hadn't thought there was any point in looking in 1.4.1, especially since Apple's server seems like about the slowest thing on the whole net from where I am -- it was taking several minutes just to get a directory listing!)

So now I have installed the software, but can't find any apps that can use it on a 2 meg 68000 machine. The Word PIM reports insufficient memory, Simple Text doesn't run under system 6, and the Talking Fraction Teacher demo doesn't recognize Speech Manager (although it works fine on my IIci with system 7.5.3 and lots of RAM.

Any suggestions? I seem to remember some old HyperCard stacks that used MacInTalk, but can't remember what they were called.

There are 2 products that are referred to as Macintalk. The original that came out for the 128k Mac and progressed to version 1.3.1 officially, but got to version 2 unsupported. Macintalk 2 was latter to become Speech Manager / PlainTalk. The two products are not compatible! The speech manager version will work on Mac Plus or better and goes from Robotic to Very high quality, depending on the Mac. The Macintalk Pro voices will work on Mac II etc. but only for short speeches, and only if you have lots of RAM.

There is some software that uses it the easiest to get is SimpleText from Apple, It reads text files etc I posted a few items onto eWorld but I have no idea where they ended up. There was a demo file reader app that should run on you Plus and there was a Hypercard stack called 'Speak This'(?) that enabled you to put speech into hypercard stacks. email me if you want something done special, for your Plus.

I recently bought a Mac IIsi so my mother can replace her aging PC XT. She will need to transfer some of her information from the PC to the Mac. I have a PC drive attached to an old Mac II. Is there an adapter that will allow me to install the card for the PC drive in the IIsi?

a couple of solutions.
A NuBus card adaptor for your IIsi should enable you to use the PC drive. or Put your PC stuff onto a 3 1/2" PC disk and put it into the IIsi drive and read it with either PC Exchange or Apple File Exchange. PC Excange is a control panel that was finally included free in the latest Mac OS releases, Apple File Exchange was free, but often unused, from System 7.0.1 on. PC Exchange is the easiest to use. DOS Mounter and Access PC are two 3rd party products that do similar things. There was a time limited demo of DOS Mounter around that may get you out of trouble if you only had a few files to copy.

The IIsi has a PDS slot that most people filled with the combination NuBus adapter/floating point chip. Since the Mac II slots are NuBus, you should be able to plug the PC drive card into the IIsi's adapter (if you have it). The usual sources for classic Mac hardware (Sun Remarketing, etc.) may have some in stock.

You could also dump stuff off the PC disks onto the Mac II's "normal" floppy, and move it to the IIsi, if you don't have the adapter and can't (or don't want to) buy one. OTOH, they can really speed up programs that do lots of floating point (like satellite tracking).

Hope this helps,

How do I surf to get the MacWeb browser on my 68k Mac?

Subject: Mac Web URL
From: Jag
Hello All

For those of you who want to get on the web with a browser on a Plus, SE or SE/30, Portable or other 68000 series Mac, here's the URL for the MacWeb browser:

It will work with Macs with 4 megs minimum.

Here's the URL for an instruction manual on how to do it:

I seem to remember using a rather old version of Timbuktu on my SE a few years ago. If I can get a hold of the version number I'll mail you back. Just wanted to let you know that it is possible.

I remember seeing an upgrade for the IINT to a IIF or G. I think it was through Shreve systems, which is in Louisiana, unfortunately.

Subject: Mac IIci and VDO Phone?
From: Scott Williamson

Has anyone been able to get CU-SEE-ME working on a IIci (68030/33.6 Modem/24MB Ram). It is just not in the Mood and keeps locking and crashing, bummer.

Any thoughts, worarounds, or alternatives would be welcomed!

Thanks

Scott
