Hi All, A friend of mine just purchased an old MAC SE30 and was wondering if it's possible to get internet software and a compatible modem for it. He's not sure which system it's running, but it's only got a 30meg HD. Suzanne

Suzanne, I used MacWeb to browse, http://www.eden.com/~arena/jagshouse/macweb.hqx

Newswatcher for news, ircle for chat and Eudora for email on my Plus.

It has 4 megs of ram (the max) and a 40 meg drive. I use config PPP and MacTCP 2.06. I use system 7.01 (available at the Apple web site ot MacUser's software archives). 7.01 uses approx 1.5 megs with very few extensions. I plugged in a Zip drive to transfer the system since it was too big for the 800K floppy drive. For full instructions on how I did this, go to http://www.eden.com/~arena/jagshouse/compactmac.hqx

Hi everyone... I recently inherited a Mac Plus (1 MB RAM/no HD) from a friend, and would like to put it to use. What I need is an external hard drive, so that I can install the System, etc. without haveing to run everything from an 800K floppy! Any ideas as to where I could buy one of these? Thanks,
Scott

Scott, Got this off the web the other day. Try:

Corporate Systems Center at 418.743.8751 or http://corpsys.com or maybe http://www.corpsys.com Or: All Tech Electronics they are located in Santa Ana next to ACP(below) and in Oceanside. OR: Team America at 818.787.1920 or http://www.vir.com/JAM/team.html (I recently saw 212 MB SCSI hard drive for $40)

JAG

ps Seeing as how 40 megs externals are still relatively expensive, you might want to consider a Zip. You MUST have driver (Iomega) 4.1 on the disk to boot from the ZIp disk. See previous Classic Mac digests for details.

Greeting Paul,

Maybe this will help you on your quest for the Mac IIsi.

From: Paul DiGiovanni Classic Mac Digest 12.12

I need some advice. I am saving my younger sister from the netherworld of PCs by buying her a used IIsi. My parents are willing to contribute ~$300 toward a monitor. Could anyone suggest a new or used monitor which will work well with a IIsi? I think there is something funky about the video with IIsi's - don't they use DRAM to power the video? What RAM recommendations would you make?

Thanks!

Paul D. DiGiovanni

Any any of the the standard Apple or third party color moniters of the 13" to 14" size, all work fine. They just plug into the Mac IIsi s internal vidio port via the DB 15 connector. The exception to this rule is the Apple 15" Monochrome Portrait moniter. The largest moniter that the Mac IIsi will support on the internal vidio is a 14" color moniter or the 15" Apple Monochrome Portrait moniter.

To use any of the larger moniters, it will require a plug-in vidio card. You have 2 options for vidio cards, the PDS or NuBus slot cards. Some of the SE/30 PDS cards and moniters will work with a PDS to PDS adaptor card, Some of them have one slot and others have two slots, for two cards.

The other option is the PDS to NuBus Adaptor cards, again available mainly in one slot cards. Both cards have a FPU built in to them. The internal vidio uses the soldered on RAM for Vidio RAM, be sure to to set the cache size to 768 K, this will make the machine run faster and not use the RAM that installed for vidio RAM. Install 4 - 4 30 pin SIMMs Mac or IBM, which ever is cheaper.

This machine maxes out at 17 Meg of RAM. With only 5 Meg of RAM your sister will be limited to SYS 7.1. With 17 Meg of RAM, she can run SYS 7.5.x. Remember that Navagator 3.0.1 wants at least 8 to 10 Meg for itself. Be sure to get at least a 540 Meg HD or a larger HD or your sister may want some of your HD space for storage space.

I have currently have 2 of my 3 Mac IIsi running, I have 2 rebuilt and running, one with 5/40, a 12" mono moniter and the other has 17/345 with a Magavox Mac 14" color moniter, the third on is in need of a ROM SIMM board and Super drive and a HD. My primary internet machine right now is a Super drived Mac II with 8/200 and a Apple 21" Monochrome moniter. The 21" is great !!

Good Luck,
Beno
Merry Christmas To All ! ! !

I believe that you can use almost any VGA monitor on that IIsi with the use of a small ( but not inexpensive ) plug from Belkin - MAC-VGA adapter ( allows apple computers to connect to VGA Monitors ) - DB15 male/high density DB15 female - product # F3H1381. I have one and got super results on an LC and LC III. The docs clearly list the II si and of course lots of others ( looks like almost all including some powerbooks and power PCs. Might be worth checking as VGA seem to be less expensive and more readily available.

Good luck.

Regarding a color monitor for your sister's si. Do not be tempted to get the Apple 12" color monitor (the one that came with most of the si and lc systems). The part that usually breaks in them is the "fly-back" transformer. There are apparently none of these parts available in the US, so the monitor cannot be repaired. I have 3 of these boat anchors in my garage. I believe the Apple 13" Color RGB to be a solid product and a good value used. It may need an adapter (Griffin), can't remember.

Ron:

Check with Lance Timco in Seattle or MediaGuide http://www.mediaguide.com/catalog.html for a ci motherboard. Another choice is to purchase a Mac ci 0/0, (under $150) if you're into storing parts. This will give you your motherboard, a power supply and FDHD floppy drive, in case any of those ever break (and a ci case).

Hey Gang,

I just did a search on Filez (http://www.filez.com) with "Netscape 1.12" as the search parameter. I recieved 22 hits at various ftp sites! Several people on this list have mentioned that this browser will work on older Macs (I am assuming under system 7 and not 6.0.x).

1. Does anyone know if the IIfx is upgradeable? If so, what do I need?

2. For my wife's MacPlus...does anyone know of an IRC client that works on the Plus? My wife is using my machine *way* too much for this and both she and I would like to give her the capabilty to use IRC on her own machine.

Thanks,

I just ran across Minifinder in one of my old system software disks for my SE. I was wondering of there was a web site or something that could give me some background on the program. For some reason, playing with Minifinder interests me. I asked around on some Macintosh IRC channels but they never heard of it and saying I was crazy. Oh ya. I can't seem to find the disk images needed to run Minifinder properly. Maybe they are out there somewhere too.

Subject: A troubled 128K...
From: Leif

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I have a 128K that has been upgraded to 512K (it has a little sticker on the back that says "fat mac"!). It seemed to work fine, tho I only have one working floppy drive (the drive IS an 800K drive... will the ROMs support 800K disks? I have only tried 400K disks). Then, I made the mistake of putting my only good system disk for the thing into my SE. I re-named a folder (I don't know if thats what caused it), and then booted up the 128K from it again. The problem seems to be slowly getting better, but I could use some help.

You can't use 800K disks on the 'Fat Mac'. I have a board that has the new ROMS, called the '512KE' system that will allow you to use 800K disk drives, actually two of them. I also have System Software and some old Mac Application you could use. See my Web page at http://www.mtn.org/~jbipes/oldmac.html

There is nothing particularly funky about the video SIGNAL on the SI, but the SI DOES use main memory (RAM) to store the video data, which has implications when you are trying to get maximum speed out of your Mac. This has nothing to do with what kind of monitor you choose. Try to find an old Apple 13" RGB - they are very good monitors (or a used Sony CPD-1302 - there are lots of these on the surplus market).

Hmm ... a _real_ SE/30 as shipped from Apple came with either a 40 MB or 80 MB hard disk ... is this definitely an SE/30 or an SE with a 30 MB aftermarket hard disk? The difference will make a major difference in what you can run. An SE/30 will run 'most anything out there, though maybe a bit slowly (though I can tell you the current version of RealAudio won't even install). An SE will be limited to the stuff mentioned in the list on the day of your posting.

Hi All,

A friend of mine just purchased an old MAC SE30 and was wondering if it's possible to get internet software and a compatible modem for it. He's not sure which system it's running, but it's only got a 30meg HD.

Suzanne

Hi Suzanne

I'm using SE/30 for all my internet activities with the following programs:

Browsing: Netscape 2.02
IRC: Ircle 2.5, or homer 0.94 (homer with slow data flow)
Mail: Eudora 1.5.5

My Mac have 8 meg of RAM and 80 meg HD (20 meg free), mode 32 (ver 1.2) without virtual memory. The system is French Canadian C1- 7.1

The communication extensions and control devices: PPP: 2.2 0a FreePPP: 2.5v2 MacPPPtimer: 1.5.3 MacTCP: F1 2.0.6

The modem :fax-modem Xeba Quicktel (logicode) 14.4 bps (faxing and PPP connection run very well),

With all this stuff, surfing (without image for greater speed on communication), mailing and chat are very reliable and convenient for my needs. All programs take about 4,5 meg. on my hard disk and I clean netscape cache after all session to save disk space.

Hope this message may help your friend!

Bye.

An SE30 could be happily connected to the Internet with little trouble. In order to recommend a software package, we should probably know how much RAM is in your pal's machine. I'm guessing that one would need at least four megs of RAM to get on the Internet with ease. If the SE30 has four megs of RAM, I'd run System 6.0.8 and download a software package from that era. Older (or smaller) versions of Fetch, Eudora, PPP (or TCP) and MacWeb can be downloaded easily. I'm not coming up with any URLs off the top of my head, but a simple search of the WWW (or a conversation with a local Mac user) should turn up something.

If the SE30 has more than four megs of RAM, I'd run System 7.1 and try to find version 1.1 of Apple Internet Connection Kit (DO NOT USE VERSION 1 OF AICK UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES! IT'S FULL OF MISTAKES AND THEREFORE BLOWS BIG CHUNKS.) or just score the "Idiot's" series book that's on store shelves now.

If the SE30 has more than eight megs of RAM, I'd run System 7.5.3 and buy Apple Internet Connection Kit 2.0. Sure, you could easily download Sys. 7.1 or 7.5.3 compatible software - save some money, and do that if you'd prefer. Buying a package doesn't cost much these days, though. Hey, who knows, maybe your ISP is Mac-friendly and has free software for subscribers!

I believe that any modem currently on the market will happily configure to the SE30.

Hope this helps!

I have a Teleport/full fax (Model A400) that runs off the ADB port, so it won't fly on a Mac Plus. george
