How can I speed up a IIfx?
I checked out the February issue of MacWorld, as suggested by a
couple of
posts on this list, but found no CD. I assumed that maybe the CD was
only
included in the U.S. (I'm in Canada). Now I see that there's some
question
as to whether it was the Feb. or January issue. Can anyone clear this
up
definitively?
I also tried picking up MacWeb 2.0 from
http://www.eden.com/~arena/jagshouse/macweb.hqx
as the proprietor of that site suggested, but seem to have gotten
MacWeb
1.00A3.2 instead.
Obviously there is some kind of world-wide conspiracy to prevent
me from
getting version 2.0! Can anyone help me out here?
I just upgraded my Mac IIci to System 7.5.3 (20 MB ram, 1.2 GB
SCSI internal
disk, ROM ver 1660, FPU and MMU, and ram_cache NuBus card)
AOL's new America OnLine 3.0 preview for Mac was installed and
launched. It
proceeded to crash the system and the system will not boot from
hard-disk
anymore. Sys 7.5.3 Disk First Aid says the hard drive is damaged and
needs
to be re-formatted - but this would wipe out everything from my last
backup.
Disk Manager Mac 4.01 reported that there is an incompatible
partition map
and that a valid partition map must be installed before updating
the
harddrive driver.
So, it appears that AOL 3.0 corrupted the partition map on the 1.2
GB
harddrive. I orginally used the default partion setup, which means
that I
didn't define any partions. Can I re-define the partitions to repair
the
damage and not lose the data/program contents on the disk? The Disk
Manager
Mac help file says that the partions can be manually set but
files
contiguous to the old and new partitions may be corrupted and lost.
Losing
a couple of programs is OK, reformatting the whole drive isn't a good
answer
for me.
The harddrive is a Fujitsu M1606S-512.
I read about this happening to someone else in the AOL user forum.
Any ideas, or suggestions about good disk repair tools or drive recovery firms?

about "IIcx -- IIci motherboards"
I own a IIcx. Is it possible to exchange the IIcx motherboard
with a IIci
motherboard? The case appears to be identical, but I was curious
about
the built-in external ports (such as video) - do they match? How
about
the power supply?
The IIci motherboard fits into the IIcx case. They have the same
power
supply and all plugs are on the same position.
Only for the video port you'll have to cut a new hole in the case.
BTW the Quadra 700 motherboard works too.

Hi all,
I recently posted a message regarding my Ci's problems with the
voodoo
Mac death sign. Thanks for all the replies I received. At this time,
we
are running the system on an external hard disk with no problem.
However,
it would be preferable to install the disk into the Ci. When I've
tried
to do so, it's been a real bear. Unlike my Performa 600, the Ci's
power
supply doesn't just slide upwards once you've undone the retaining
screw
on the back panel. The hard disk and floppy drives are also within
this
plastic retainer. It's not clear how to get that out either, except
that
the power supply seems to be sitting on top of the frame on a
support
flange. Any advice on how to remove the hard disk would be
appreciated.

Speaking of ancient Mac stuff...
My boss person is a charter member of the local MUG and bought one
of the
first Macs (128K) in 1984. She remains a true believer and just got
a
PowerBook 1400c.
We are having a heck of time getting one of her favorite programs
- Talking
Moose 4.0 - to work. He shows up but only speaks once in a great
while, and
is mute (animation works but no voice) the rest of the time.
I'm guessing that Macintalk 3 and the old Macintalk file that TM
uses aren't
getting along. Or is it something else - the PowerPC? System 7.5.5?
I'm asking the Classic Mac faithful since there's bound to be at
least one
other TM addict who can answer our plea.
Also, does anyone know what happened to Baseline Publishing (maker
of TM)?
Can't find any reference to a URL, address or phone number despite
numerous
Web searches. Any info can be sent to the email address above.

I just upgraded my IIfx (factory original) from 8 to 20 MB of RAM
(around
$240 for four 4 MB SIMMS) and it speeded up a lot of the operations
quite a
bit.
I don't think there's any way to make a PowerMac of a IIfx -- or
even
approach PowerMac speed on one. If there were, it would probably not
be
cost-effective.
Good luck.

Hi folks,
I use a IIfx (1300 MB HD and 8 MB RAM), it's a good MAC, but a
little bit slow.
Do anyone know how I can speed it up in a cheep way??
(It's already upgraded from a II to a IIfx)
Can I make a PowerMAC of it??
I hope anyone will answer me....
I have a ColorStyleWriter 2500 and an SE 4/20 (7.5). I want to use
them
together, but the CSW driver wants a 68030 or higher. The SE is
68000.
Anyway, I have a friend who (for some weird reason) uses a SW1500
driver
for his StuleWriterII. He claims that using a newer driver makes it
print
faster. Anyway, I want to use an OLDER driver for my 2500 so I can
plug
it into the SE. Does anyone have any ideas? I have heard that 2400
driver
is almost the same, and that wouldn't be any use.
*deep breath*
What my REAL goal is here is to have an AppleTalk network with my
6100/60
(24/350/ZIP) and the SE (for file sharing, etc.) and the 2500. The
2500
WON'T work on AppleTalk. If you want to network it, you gotta buy a
$80
"LocalTalk Module" (yeah, right!) or use GreyShare. I want to put
the
2500 on the SE modem port, leave the modem on the 6100's modem port,
and
put the two printer ports together (GreyShare). I'm SURE (really,
I've
looked into it) that this would work if the StyleWriter driver
was
compatible with the SE. There MUST be some work-around, because I
don't
even really want to print from the SE. I just want to share the
printer.
If all this seems very skecthy and confusing, well, its kinda late
and
I'm kinda tired. eMail me for more details (about the network, not
how
tired I am).
TIA!
OK, I just want to settle this once and for all. I am realy fed up
with
this talk about the apple CD ROM driver. If you people wanna argue
about
it, try doing personal eMail. This listserv is getting full of
dumb
messages like those. At first, it was on topic, but its getting old
now.
I'm sure that there are only a few people on the list who even
CARE.
Maybe you should start a "Lets rant and rave about Apple CD ROM
drivers
(and McDonald's Hot Coffee)" listserv.

Subject: RADIUS SE/25 Accelerator
I've learned a lot from this group and really appreciate it. I've
come
across enough Mac carcasses to have assembled half a dozen
working
machines and have played Robin Hood with them. Usually deserving
youngsters get them. It gives these guys the exposure they will need
in
this changing world. One particularly deserving kid started going to
the
used/flea markets. He came back with this accelerator. I'd love to
help
him make it work.
Here is the problem. It boots the accelerator with the little
Radius
promo window, then the happy-mac, but siezes and rapidly flashes
the
Welcome Window. The SE (4/200 with 7.1) works fine without
accelerator
installed. I have no manual and don't know if the problem with
jumper
settings. There are 6 sets of 3-pin jumpers. I've changed them one at
a
time, causing different effects; usually errors that preceed the
Radius
promo window. Now I'm back at square one. Does it just sound like a
bad
board? Extensions off doesn't help either

1. System 7.0.1 (Stripped of everything including the Finder)
2. ShortFinder 1.5b2 (Replaces the Finder)
3. Norton Utilities (an older/smaller version)
4. Disk First Aid
If any of you are interested in doing something similar, there is
also an

ShortFinder 1.5b2, and should also be obtained from your favorite FTP

Let me start by saying that I love these old Macs... I recently
found an
old Mac 512k that had a broken monitor... upon inspection (and
purchase)
I found that it had been upgraded to a Mac Plus via a company
once
called Monster Mac... New ROMS, 2 Megs of RAM and a jerry rigged
(daughter) board sodered to it... the RAM is soldered to the board
with
no way to increase it. There is a SCSI port out the back that I have
a
40 Meg hard drive attached.
I repaired the monitor and got system 7.0 running on the thing
(at
975k).My question is.. is there ANY way to get this Running on the
net
(eudora and telnet.. not worried about web browsing... thats what
my
performa is for). Do I have to switch to system 6.0.X and find some
old
software??? I read the artical posted on this group regarding a 4
Megs
of RAM minimum... this is disheartening... as the chance of
virtual
memory is out the window on the 68000 Macs. ANY replys or words
of
ENCOURAGEMENT would be welcome.
You can indeed get your trusty Mac on the net (no browser) with 2 megs. YAY!
I use system 7.0.1, although 7.0 will work just fine.
Mac TCP 2.06
ConfigPPP 2.01
Newswatcher
MacWeb 1.1.1
Fetch 2.1.2
Here's how your ram allocations break down:
your system 7.0 (975k)
Eudora lite 1.55 (333k min, 500k prefered)
Telnet 2.6 (544k min)
----------------------
1852k total with minimum Eudora setting
You're on the net, dude
You can even run Teach Text as well
JAG
ps,
You can search the web for shareware email that may take even less
ram.
Also, take aout EVERY extension and control panel (including
printer
drivers) to see if you can squeeze out a few more k of ram. Run with
2 or 3
fonts only. Take EVERYTHING you don't absolutely need out of the
sytem
folder to pare it down.
You CAN run apps with less than the min ram, although they may
crash more
often. See what works best.

2. Chill
3. Get a cup of Java. No make that Ovaltine. Caffeine is bad for you.

4. Sounds like your Plus SCSI is bad. If the 350 mb works but DOES
NOT boot
from the Plus as it should, makes me think it's the Plus SCSI
connector.
5. You could try one more drive on the plus just for the heck of it.
If IT
does the same thing as the 350mb), you know it ain't the drive.
6. Take it to the shop. Although most charge $60 just to walk in the
door
which is outrageous.
7. Buy a cheap Plus motherboard (about $25) and pop it in.

I have an accelerated Mac II which has worked well for many years as
a
mail and calendar server on a small appletalk network. This weekend,
the
monitor went black as if it had been turned off. Although the
monitor
shows a black screen, the server is still operating and can be
mounted
over the network. Thinking that the monitor had failed, I
connected
another monitor to the Mac II with the same result--no picture. Next
I
tried moving the video card to another slot. Still no change. Did
my
video card die? It is the original Apple TBF video card. I'm sure
the
monitor is getting power as it heats up. Could this problem be caused
by
something else besides a failed video card? If so, what choices do
I
have for replacement?
Try replacing the lithium batteries (yes batteries) on the logic
board. One
of my clients had a similar problem and replacing the batteries did
the
trick. The sticky part is that the batteries are soldered onto the
logic
board, so its not as easy to replace. I actually just wound the leads
of
the new battery around the old one, but I'd opt for a more
permanent
solution next time.
Recently, an organization that I freelance for had a SE crash. It
was the
hard disk and we have not been able to access it to recover any
infor
mation. This is not the problem.
The SE was used soley to run a BBS and the incoming files were
removed
daily. We immediatly connected a hard disk and installed System
7.0.1. I
installed the BBS software. and it is running fine.
The problem is that the SE cannot se the ethernet. (Yes, they do
have an
ethernet board.) I specifically installed the network/ethernet
software. It
still cannot see the ethernet. Any suggestions?

We had a similar problem w/ a monitor connected to a Mac II. It
was the

It appears that the problem is w/ the monitor, not the card. I
read a

it
said it was a problem w/ a capacitor w/in the monitor.
Hope this helps,

I am a proud owner of two Classic Macs, a IIvx and an SE. Im
hoping to
get some upgrade advice for both plus some advice for a basic
email/web
system for my mother.
1) I need/want to upgrade my IIvx as a stopgap until I purchase a
PPC
late this year and then turn the thing into a file server/scan
station/print server. I am leaning toward the Sonnet 40/80 040
upgrade
with the FPU and the 128k L2. The Dystar is just to expensive. I
would
be intrested to hear from anyone who has used this, espically in a
IIvx.
2) I am also thinking of going with the Sonnet 030/16mhz upgrade
for the
SE and adding the full 16mb ram for my "kitchen" Mac attached to the
IIvx
over PhoneNet. Again, any comments.
3) I have a mother who still thinks that "those computers are just
a
toy, a fad and they will never catch on." She run a day care center
so
somethig she could keep the books on would be nice but I doubt she
would
use it more than 5 minutes after I left the house. I would like to
set
up an email/web station for her. Crazy thing is that her parents have
a
Performa 6100 and are active "surfers." I have been leaning toward
an
SE/30 with max 16MB Ram, a Zip drive, and an HP DJ600 running MacWeb
but
I have also looked ar the Performa 63X series as a possible solution.
I
would rather have an all in one unit but I know nothing about the
5xx
series. Again, any help.

What cable do I need to get-specifically to hook it up to my Mac?
you need a standard DIN-8 cable ($10). this usually comes with all
apple
printers. (also probably the same one you are using on your
deskwriter.
I assume there isn't a power adapter specifically for this
printer? I am
thinking I should be able to just use a generic one?
are you talking about a power cable? if so, apple uses the same
power
cables for most of its hardware, so any would work. a generic one if
fine
too.
I am interested in getting a switch box so that I can switch
between these
2 printers as I need. What do I need for switching? I don't want to
get
port juggler-seems a bit much for just 2 printers. And yes, my
other
serial port is in use for my GV Platinum-which I use much too often
to
consider that port in this scenario.
you can try networking your printers. for that, you want to make
sure
that both printers are appletalk ready. for the deskwriter, check
the
manual or call hp. for the imagewriter, look inside the printer,
under
the front panel. there may be a localtalk card installed. (make sure
it
is not a 32k buffer card). if all is fine, you can get localtalk
nodes
(phonenet compatible) for less than $15 each. you will need one for
each
devise you are connecting.
What is the name of these ink ribbon things?
imagewriter ribbons are still available. i buy the apple ones
from
macwarehouse.
What media will this print on? Can I print labels?
most paper media works. labels and anything made to work on dot
matrix
printers are fine also. there is a lever used to adjust the
distance
between the print head and the drum. open the front cover and the
lever
at the right next to the rod on which the print head moves. it has
4
positions.
hope this all helps.

Opps, Im one of the ones that hadnt been reading the header.
Sorry.
Another question to any IIvx owners. I want to upgrade my
VRAM.
MacSecrets says I can go to 1mb by adding a 512k. Is this a special
512k
VRAM or will the ones that are advertised work. Also, has anyone
done
this? Does it do anything to spped performance or will I just spen
$30
or so?
Thanks again.
