My brother-in-law is a traveling salesman. Recently I had the idea to get

source for a reliable accelerator and four 2meg 30 pin simms to bring
8megs up to16megs. Any help would be appreciated.

DiiMO still makes a 50MHz accelerator, which I have seen for about $250, $300
with FPU coprocessor. You could try MicroMac Technology at
<http://www.micromac.com/>

A 68040 upgrade was available, but I have been told by Tim Frair of Pacific
Mac (800) 622-6261 or Pacifikmac that these are no longer being
produced. Some stock may be left with some retailers, if you want to spend
the money.

I picked up 4 4meg sims for $160 at my local CompUSA.

I take it Jim's brother in law doesn't want to shell out too much cash. A

yeah, that seems to be a common ailment with many of the original
SE-30's, built from 1989-1991. The 20/40/80 hd's simply are prone
to failure..Mine did,was able to get it running, transfered the
data off it,and took it out, replacing it with a 500 apple internal
HD...my SE30 runs so well,(20mb ram/500 HD) on the NET,I prefer it
to my PPC upgraded Quadra 700 most of the time..I also use a colour
classic to surf as well...

SPEAKING of vintage mac stuff..I have a cache of misc stuff for sale
such as a RASTEROPS 24 bit color card for the SE-30, carry bags, etc

keep the input coming in people, and remember..MACS RULE,and PC'S drool!

Aloha,

I'm surfing looking for info on old MAC's. I have a PLUS which I need
to repair the power supply. A portable that is a door stop. And a
beefed up 128 with power supply problems. Do you know where I can get
schematics and parts for the good old MAC's. Thanks

Aloha

I suggest you contact Sun Remarketing at 1-800-821-3221. They sell rebuilt
power supply boards. If you install it yourself be careful with the large
wire running to the side of the tube and the round condenser on the power
supply board - there is a big shock stored in there. Also be careful with the
wires plugged into the back of the tube - they often can crack the solder if
disturbed to much but are easy to resolder. If you get screen flickers that
is likely the problem (if the power supply is known good).

long live the baby Macs,

I have a problem with two "new" ImageWriters: They don't print at all. The
self test is ok, paper and ribbon too.

I tried to print from a MacPlus 1/80 with System 6.0.7, with and without
TrueType installed, with and without Quickdraw installed, I tried to print
from an SE/30 with system 7.1, and both failed. The system is fresh
installed, the drivers too. The cable is ok as well: when I select offline
the Mac reports this, when I'm online not. Therefore the communication
between the two devices seems to be ok.

It's no problem to print on a HP DeskWriter on the same port (but that
driver consumes a lot of RAM).

What's wrong? The ImageWriter has two DIP-Switches inside: is there a
special configuration I need? What can I change with thes switches?

Any suggestions on how to get my NEC 3x cdrom to work on my MAC II? Being
a MAC newbie I see it being looked at and even see it in SCSI probe 3.1 and
MT Everything 1.1.1b, but no CD icon is to be found on my desktop.

Gary,

Is the "DriveCD/NEC 5.31a" control panel installed in the control panel
folder inside your system folder? To my knowledge it is the latest NEC
CD-ROM driver available. Best of all it drives practically every NEC
DC-ROM player out there. According to the Read Me, it is compatible with
Systems 6.0.8 through 7.5.3. I'm using System 7.5.5 on my IIci and have
had no problems. I downloaded "DriveCD/NEC 5.31a" off of the NEC site on
AOL. There is also an NEC web site at http://www.nec.com . Here is the
ftp address for the control panel. It also includes a great utility for
speeding up the reading of CD-ROM file directories.

ftp://ftp.nectech.com/ftp/pub/peripherals/mac-cd/speedycd.hqx

Let me know if you have any problems.

I find it amusing that there is only one CD-ROM driver for the Mac and
numerous ones needed for PCs.

My question is about downloading softwares for my mac with a P.C. ?

I do connect myself on the net with netscape on a P.C. of my university. As I
download a Mac software, it saves it under a name xxxxxxxx.hqx on the
network of my university. With the only mac of it, I transfert the
file on a Mac floppie, but the file appers as a PC file but not a Mac
one !!! So, how to turn it into a normal mac file ?

Seems like you're doing everything right -- just stopping short. The
XXX.hqx files are compressed and need to be expanded. The shareware
program "Stuffit Expander" will be able to do that for you. It comes from
Aladdin Software and, although I'm not certain, I'll bet it can be found
on their site, <http://www.aladdinsys.com/index.html>.

Good luck!

Gary--

You'll need to install the software from NEC, available on their web site:
My mom has a single speed NEC drive working fine on a IIsi. You'll also
need some of the apple CD software, available from apple, or on recent
system disks. The NEC software includes it, but it's not the most recent.

Based on your experiences folks, what is the best modem I need to buy &
hook up to my idle Classic?

Any idea will be appreciated. Some body said PC Modem can be used also ?

An external modem is an external modem -- just about any one will work on
any computer. You _may_ want to buy a Mac-version modem because it
(typically) will come with Macintosh communications and FAX software and
sometimes even a Macintosh modem cable (you can buy the software and
cable independently, though).

Some very good 28.8/33.6 modems can be purchased for around $120. I'm not
sure your Classic will handle the top throughput of a 28.8+ modem, but it
wouldn't hurt to have it since you can always use this modem on another
(faster) Mac. If you're really money-constrained, buy a 14.4 modem; they
should cost around $50 used (don't waste your money on a new 14.4).

Features you should look for: upgradeable ROM (replace a chip or run a
software program to resolve issues with new OSes or hardware; watch out
-- some modem manufacturers force you to run the updater on a PeeCee);
good technical support (can you get through to them? do they actually
know how to use a Mac?); Distinctive Ring or something like Supra's
"Silent Answer" so that the modem and an answering machine/phone/etc. can
share the same phone line if they need to; Class 2 FAX (if you FAX a lot).

Harder to figure out will be performance over bad lines and the ability
to negotiate changes in "speed" (many of the tests in magazines and on
the Web have flawed methodologies and should not be trusted). You may
want to buy the same brand of modem that your service provider uses;
makes it somewhat easier to resolve connection issues.

I replaced a Supra 14.4 with a Practical Peripherals 28.8. Both are okay.
The PPI seems less bothered by bad phone lines than the Supra. OTOH, the
Supra had several features (better speed display, louder speaker, Silent
Answer) that I miss. I didn't feel like spending the money for lots of
fancy features and I didn't get them; the PPI is pretty generic.

I also looked hard at the Motorola ModemSURFR (not upgradeable) and the
US Robotics Sportster (seems you either get a good one or a bad one, and
sometimes even USR can't tell you which or if a bad one can be fixed).

BTW, you should think about the 56K capability of some modems. USR is
making a big deal out of this, but, IMHO, most of it is hype. I connect
at 28.8 maybe half the time, no more. 56K only works on the downloading
side, and that's if your service provider is wired digitally to the
Internet backbone and if you're using the same 56K technology. Then
there's the matter of international standards -- what USR wants isn't
always what USR gets. That's a lot of IFs in my book. Any other
questions? Feel free to email. Good luck!

Not inside an SE/30. I'm not sure about the IIci or Duo Dock, but I would
bet against it. If you have access to either one, it's a simple matter to
remove the cover and look where the existing drive is (or where it would
go on the Dock) (I have a IIci but can't tear it apart right now) .

also, is there room and connectivity in a mac se to fit an internal hard
disk. the se has two 800k floppies. thanks.

Yes. Two choices: replace one floppy, or find one of the few kits
available which used some brackets to mount the hard disk behind the top
floppy. If memory serves (and why it can remember stuff like this but not
birthdays and anniversaries, I do not know <g>), Everex/EMAC had a kit
like this; APS may also have had one, and third parties may have sold
them. In each case, the disk in question was 3.5". It may be hard to hunt
_those_ down; easier to find a standard mounting kit and replace a floppy.

What sort of external monitor options do I have available for my SE/30
nowadays?

A few. A couple of companies sold color and greyscale video cards for the
SE/30 PDS slot; Micron and Radius come to mind. You might find one used.
You will need the card for external video. When I looked into it several
years ago for my SE/30, the card was around $200; coupled with the $400
or so it cost to buy a decent Mac color monitor back then, it seemed more
reasonable to me to make the investment in newer (color) hardware.

The NEC should have come with driver software which must be in your
System Folder so you can read anything from the CD-ROM. If nothing came
with the drive, you could try contacting NEC (on the Web or through their
tech support). You may have to buy third-party driver software like FWB's
(or maybe LaCie's SilverLining or APS' PowerTools is available). That
should solve the problem.

I recently found a program called Master Tuner very cheap at a software

students as it seems a great way to teach tuning fundamentals. The problem
is, it must have a MacRecorder or compatible sound digitizer in the modem
port. I tried to get it to see (hear?) the built-in sound port on my IIsi
without success.

I have tried Shreve, Sun Remarketing, and the A.R.C., but they don't have
one. Does anyone have an idea where I could pick one up at a reasonable
price?

Thanks,
