There is only one resistor to snip when upgrading memory on
those
machines that don't have the jumper.(It is labeled clearly)
When snipping, use good pliers and snip as close to the
motherboard as
possible. This will allow for resoldering the resistor if necessary.
This is not the issue it used to be when (with memory shortages
and high
prices) we used to cry for memory and cannabalize other Macs to
get
some.
To summarize, someone may want to take the machine back to a one
mb
machine which will require resoldering the resistor. If snipped to
close
to the resistor, it becomes impossible without overheating which
wrecks
it (experience speaking).

The cheapest way to find a torx 15 that will reach the screws on
a
"fishtank" Mac is to buy a screwdriver/bit set that has both a long
shank
and an extension, or an extension and very long bits. I found one at
an
auto parts shop for $10. You can also buy the extension bits
separately
for about $3.

Hello everyone,
Here's another cry for help. I'm looking for a Torx 15 tool to
open my compact Macs.
I'll try to make this as short as possible. I have a acquired 11
Mac LC's 2
or 4 MB RAM(I think, they came without box's and instructions) and
20Meg HD's
. I want to teach a basic compter curriculum to children at our local
Boys &
Girls Club. Each computer had system 6.0.? and HyperCard 2.1. I had
7.1 so I
installed that on each of them. I had a few problems installing the
system 7
because Sam Intercept was on the old system. I could not turn it off
before
the instilation because it was set with a pass word.(I have to
contact the
Proffessor who used the computers back in 1993 to get the pass
word)
If I booted the computer with the instilation disk in the Hard drive,
I could
install system 7. So I installed 7.1 into each of the systems.
????Questions????
Number 1. Can I turn the Sam Intercept Extensions off without
knowing the
password?(I tried to throw it in the garbage but it would not let me)
2. Was my instilation method ok, or will it cause problems down the line?
3. What are some of the obvious programs I should have on the computers?
4. Where can I find GOOD Freeware and Shareware that can be ran
with the
current memory capcity that I have on these computers?
5. How can I find out the amout of RAM and MEGS on the Hard
Drive?
I am looking for the Apple CD-ROM software to use on a Mac LC
running
System 7.0.1. The documentation with the Apple CD-ROM software 5.1.7
on
the Apple web site indicates that System 7.1 is required, so
presumably the
web version would not work on a 7.0.1 system. Thanks!

This is a continuation of a problem I have been trying to solve
for three
months now, and it is being posted to Mac-Wizards and Classic-Mac:
PLEASE, PLEASE READ THIS IN ITS ENTIRETY BEFORE RESPONDING - it's
long and
complicated, and, although everyone has offered helpful suggestions
in the
past, I have tried most, if not all, of the common troubleshooting
that can
be done that is usually mentioned in replies. So, for the sake of
time-saving, please read the whole thing thoroughly:
I have a 6115CD with an extra 350 Quantum drive MYSELF, and I had
purchased
a Mac Plus with 4 megs of RAM and an external 20SC Apple HD for a
friend of
mine.
The Mac Plus could not "see" the drive at all, not even with
numerous SCSI
scanning devices and numerous variations on ID #, terminators
(flow-through, standard, 25-pin, 50-pin, etc.) and cables.
Now, MY 6115 could see, format and test the drive just fine (I
know that
you are not supposed to format a drive from a different computer, but
I had
no choice), and I tried formatting the drive with numerous (READ -
more
than 5) different utilities, and at all interleaves 1 - 3. The Mac
Plus
STILL could not see the drive AT ALL.
SO, I plugged MY external 350 Quantum into the Mac Plus (with the
SAME
cables and terminators), and the Mac Plus could see THAT drive with
no
problems. Unfortunetly, I could not afford to sell or give my drive
to my
friend, so that was out as a solution.
ANYWAY: So I could not figure out whether the drive or the Mac
Plus was at
fault, so I bought ANOTHER 20 meg external drive (a HDC, or something
like
that).
SAME THING all over again! MY 6115 can see this new 20 meg drive
just
fine, can format it, test it, etc. etc. etc., but the Mac Plus
cannot, no
matter what configuration, interleave, driver, etc. etc. etc. etc.
etc.
etc. etc. I try.
So the Mac Plus can see and use ONLY MY 350 mag drive, and MY 6115
can see
and use all three, but I cannot get either of the two small drives to
work
AT ALL with the Mac Plus.
I have tried the following formatting software:
FWB Toolkit PE
FWB Toolkit Pro
MicroMat Utility
HDC Disk Manager (came with the new 20 drive)
Apple HD SetUp (with the Apple drive only, of course)
I have tried, as I said, every possible combination of cables,
terminators,
ID #'s, formatters possible, and the Mac Plus will STILL NOT EVEN
ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THERE IS A DRIVE HOOKED UP. I have tried making a
longer
chain with MY 350 Quantum drive hooked up, along with my ZIP drive.
The
Mac Plus can see and use BOTH just fine UNTIL I hook up EITHER 20 meg
drive
(ANYWHERE in the chain!), and then the Mac Plus cannot see ANY OF
THE
DRIVES (ZIP, QUANTUM, 20SC or HDC 20).
This is riudiculous. I cannot see how this is possible within the
realms
computer science, and I know that, even if I buy 30 more drives, none
but
my 350 will work! Ludicrous!
In any case, I have spent three months trying to figure this out,
and I
have spent $30 for the drives together, but ANOTHER $50 on
cables,
terminators, etc. trying to get them to work, and I cannot afford the
$150
to bring them to an Apple service center.
Now my friend wants to buy a used PC, and I think, at this point,
that
maybe that's the way to go.
I would offer a reward for anyone who can figure this one out, but
I cannot
afford it.
Anyone???

Hi,
I managed to open my SE case using an ordinary screw-driver socket
set,
which had the right Torx bit, and an extender section that gave it
the
reach I needed.
I didn't need a cracking tool. Just gently work the case apart
with
any thin flat implement that came to hand.
Hope this helps,
Steve
Hi everyone!
A couple yars ago, when I ordered an "opening tools kit" for cracking
my
Plus, I've got a very long Allen key of 3/32" diameter, (may be 3 or
4 mm
should work), plus a little workShop clamp without rubber protectors
at
ends. The clamp is a sort of big clothes peg, about 1 inch large who
fit
very well in little crack around the mac's case. These tools could be
find
at your local woodcraft store.
'hope this may help someone!

I ahve an external cd-rom drive maded by sony. Yet when I try to
mount
cds in it the mac doesn't seem to want to. SCSI Probe finds the
drive
fine and it is not conflicting with any other SCSI id. I do have
the
Apple Cd-Rom Driver loaded on my Plus 170ex/4 but I was told it
does'nt
mount any thing other than Apple Cd-Rom drives. Is this true? If so
is
there a diver to mount non Apple CD-Rom? Or is it a limitation with
my
machine? Please Help.

This memory isn't hard to find. GURU says to upgrade a MAC SE to 4
mg you
need 30 pin simms minimum speed 150ns. Tom Spearman
has 1 mg 80 ns for $6 each. Other chip sellers have them as well.

I recently aquired a Mac SE 1/20 for $25. I am thinking of
upgrading
it to 4 meg and I have a question about memory for it. Can I use
PC
memory (with parity)? People seem to be giving these simms away
lately. Also, how slow can the memory be for this beast.
I'm not entirely certain how slow the memory can go for an SE
before it
wigs out, but just finding the memory is usually a challenge. I ended
up
having to use MacWarehouse (1-800-255-6227) to hunt some down; all of
my
other catalogs skipped the baby Macs. I don't think that Mac memory
is
even close to PC memory, and especially the SE's funky little SIMM
chips.
I would try either MacWarehouse or one of the other web sites that
sell
Macintosh memory to be safe. Also, if you choose to upgrade it
yourself,
make sure you have a Torx T-15 screwdriver with a looo-oong length
and a
case spreader or a suitable substitute.
Good luck,

Here's my weekly posting of how I got an old Plus on the web:
I used MacWeb to browse,
<http://www.eden.com/~arena/jagshouse/macweb.hqx>
Newswatcher for news, ircle for chat and Eudora for email on my Plus.
It
has 4 megs of ram (the max) and a 40 meg drive. I use config PPP and
MacTCP
2.06. I use system 7.01 (available at the Apple web site ot
MacUser's
software archives). 7.01 uses approx 1.5 megs with very few
extensions.
I plugged in a Zip drive to transfer the system since it was too
big for
the 800K floppy drive.
For full instructions on how I did this, go to

I not sure that 6.08 will not work on the Colour Classic, even
though
it was intended for the LCII which shares the same board. I have
both
machines but have never tried 6.08 on the CC. 6.08 was intended
for
the LCII and the Powerbook 100, the main differences fro,m 6.07
being
in the printer drivers. It is available from an Apple site
somewhere,
and someone once had a copy on their own site. I will look up the
address up tonight -I am writing this at work on a Compaq PC!
Perhaps
I ought to try 6.08 on my CC and let you know? If there is
another
version of 6.08 for the CC I would love to find it.
Cheers to y'all
Subject: System 6.0.8 for a Color Classic?

Hey Classic Mac'ers:
Got a quick question here:
Does anyone know where to download the "special" version of
System 6.0.8
that works on a Color Classic?
A Color Classic normally won't run any system older than 7.1
(you get a
message stating that System 7.1 or newer is required for the CC
at
boot-up); however, I remember reading somewhere that a special
version of
6.0.8 was available for the Color Classic: anyone know where this can
be
found?
According to the myth/rumor/lore that I remember reading, this
special
version of 6.0.8 was an unofficial, unsupported release from Apple
for
use by U.S.-system users in Japan, where System 7.0/7.1 was not
yet
available when the Color Classic was introduced in February of
1993.
thanks in advance,
Opening the Classic case:
1) I wasn't able to construct a long torx tool by building up sockets
and
extensions. You can try it, it'll look great, but it will be too
thick to fit
under the handle!
2) I couldn't find the right tool from any general hardware or
mechanic's
supply house. Nobody else needs a long skinny torx driver.
3) Check computer supply places, flea markets (the few with Mac parts).
4) But the best possibility will be with Mac User Groups. Attend a
meeting,
or just call up their president. The torx driver was a VERY hot item
a few
years ago among Mac geeks. I believe there's a list of Mac UGs
somewhere on
Apple's site.
[Note: The Northern New Jersey Mac UG is apparently inactive. But
calling its
phone number connected me with an officer of the club. And if needed
help,
I'm sure he could have steered me. Try it, you'll like it!]
5) I used a plastic windshield ice scraper to crack the case. I
didn't use it
as a pry bar; I put it in the crack and twisted. Everybody up north
has one
of them (no torx problem here). If you're careful, you'll open the
case
without any dents in the case and, after all, does it make any
difference if
you do?

As a follow-up to my earlier reply, I tried running System 6.08
(which
is avalibale at the Apple Software updates site) on my Colour
Classic
and it refused, with the message saying that 6.08 would no work
on
this machine. So, unless there was a specially altered version for
the
Japanese market, the Colour Classic is a System 7 only beast (but
beautiful all the same!).
Cheers,
Keith
