I would be forced to
recommend AtEase or Kid's Desk over FoolPROOF, since these not
only
give limited access but depend on a password, not a key combination,
to
disable their protection.
Sun Remarketing (1-800-821-3221) is presently offering Folderbolt
Pro for
$29. I've never used this particular security program but it's well
known
and you should be able to find reviews at your public library. It
seems
to do more or less what you were looking for; needs System 6.0.7 or
newer.

1) What kind of software does the Apple OneScanner need, and
what is its
compatibility with, say, a Mac Plus or a Performa 6115CD, or anything
in
between?
My Apple One scanner came with the following software.
"Ofoto" which is a scanner driver/application to scan graphics into a
PICT
format, and "OmniPage Direct", a scanner driver/application for
scanning
written pages, then convert and insert the data into a word
processor.
Both of these driver/applications should work on your 6115CD. They
work fine
on my older Q660AV (68040 processor running at 25Mhz)
There are other similar type applications available that will do the
job,
but I am not aware of sources.
Bill Baldwin, retired in MS
One of the buildings in our district has a neat Power Mac
5200/100
Performa. I love it and use it all the time to scan in pictures on
an
attached OneScanner. They also have Adobe Photo Shop on board.
The
default screen color has turned to a pinkish/purple and does not
change. All
white areas are pinkish/purple and sometime flickers to either a
deeper purple
or or more pinkish pink. Resetting the color tints simply changes to
a
different color be the default pinkish/purple remains the same. My
guess
is that some type of circuit filter or something has failed. A check
with
our homepage shows the Gif Images made with the Mac at
www.tanet.net/~sunlib, are fine. Any ideas with this?

I got a II vi from work (well actually I borrowed it, but I
have no
intention to give it back). Are there any II vi owners on this
list
that can tell me about their adventures with the machine ?
The IIvi was the international version of the IIvx sold here.
It was
identical to the IIvx with following differences:
- IIvx had 32K L2 cache, IIvi had none.
- IIvx was 32MHz, IIvi was 16Mhz.
- IIvx has FPU, IIvi was an option
I have a IIvx running system 7.5.5. It is the most reliable and
stable Mac I
have ever owned.
I have had a IIvi for years and it has been a great machine. My
son now
uses it with a Turbo040i(33MHz) in it along with a 2x CD-ROM drive
and
an E-net card. I had a bit of trouble getting 7.5.3 to load with
this
configuration. By removing the accelerator, I was able to get to
7.5.5.
Unfortunately, I was not able to run OT 1.1.2. Oh well...
Sounds like the price was right. Enjoy!
Subject: 2 Questions for Mac SE Users

Question #1:
I have spoken with several users to get this first question answered,
but
I am still falling short. Here is the background:
1 PowerMac 7100 with Global Village Teleport
1 PowerBook 160 with internal modem
1 Mac SE with no modem.
1 Stylewriter 1200
I have these three macs hooked up on an appletalk network. The
obvious
choice would be to use the 7100 to control the SW 1200, however, both
of
its ports are tied up (appletalk and modem). I want to use the Mac SE
to
control the printer. I know the SW 1200 is only supposed to work on
a
68030 or higher. I was under the impression that the SW 1200 could
be
run with the SW II drivers. So far I have not gotten this to work.
I
want this printer to be shared between the three computers so I can
print
from any of them. The PB 160 is not a good choice because half of
the
time it is absent from my network. I know of the ethernet adapter
for
the SE 1200, but I don't want to spend that kind of money when I
eventually want to renovate an old LaserWriter IINT. Anyone have
any
ideas? I will takee any hack you can think of? Thanks :)
Question #2:
I want to hook the Mac SE up to the PowerMac by ethernet. I
already
have a transceiver on the 7100 for 10base2 and I am tring to find
an
affordable one ($20 or under) for the Mac SE's PDS slot. Any ideas.
The
only place I have found to sell them is PowerOn-line computers and
they
said that they could not guarantee what type of card I would get and
it
would not come with software. That makes it pretty unuseable...
Any help is appreciated...Post to either the list or me directly.
Thanks, Bill
Sounds like you're home if you can find an E-net card for the SE.
I have
one from Asante. It came from who-knows-where with no software.
Asante
still has drivers on its ftp site but I believe that the drivers
loaded
with 7.1 worked (not absolutely sure). That would allow you to go
E-net
between the SE and 7100 and use Printer Share on the printer port
directly to the SW1200. That, of course, disenfranchises the
PB160
without a restart and plugging work.
I thought there was an LocalTalk option for the SW1200. If you
went that
route, you could run LocalTalk Bridge on the 7100 allowing
LT-attached
devices to "see" ET-attached devices and vice versa. Then you could
have
the printer and the 160 on LT and the SE (and later the LaserWriter,
I
presume) on ET with the 7100 on both. Whew!
Good luck, sounds like fun. BTW, does PowerOn-line have a URL?
"1) What kind of software does the Apple OneScanner need, and

anything

You should be able to use an early version of Ofoto to scan with.
It
saves files as PICTs, TIFFs, etc. and then you can open them later
with
Photoshop or whatever.
I'm not well versed on Ofoto, but I had a copy (version 2.0.2
or
something like that) that came with a scanner I bought, and it was a
68K
application so I would think any version from 2.0 and earlier would
work.
On a Mac Plus? Hard to say. Give it it a shot. But it'll work on
a
Performa 6xxx, for sure. I don't remember how big the app is, but
it
installed from just one 1.4MB floppy.
Fortunately, Apple has listened to its customers (and competitors)
and
its newer scanners come with Photoshop plug-ins, so you can scan
directly
into Photoshop. : )

Greetings Classic Mac Readers,
Please excuse this long missive. Or else, skip it.
I am a physically, cognitively, and financially challenged reader
of this
list. Though I have been a computer user since the early eighties,
and a
Mac user simce '89, my skills are merely at the level a a barely
computer
literate person. This means that inspite of my best efforts, I am
presently in danger of falling below the level of functionality. I
hope
some reader can help me with some advice concerning what minimal
steps I
can take in order to be able to keep doing what I do with my system
now and
maybe improve things a bit.
Since '89 I have been using a Mac Classic 2/40 running System
6.0.7 and
Finder 6.1.7. I also use an E -Mac 2400 bps modem, Eudora version
1.3.1+ps+sc4 (I haven't the faintest clue as to what the stuff after
the
'+' means, I am just reading the 'about' panel but I suspect it has
to do
with some customising that the system people at my service provider,
Simon
Fraser University, did), Zterm, and MS Word 4. I also have
Versaterm
4.1.1 installed, but I find it a bit complicated to use and use the
Zterm
to reach bulletin boards instead. Someone has given me a
Sheikosha
SP-1000AP dot matrix printer without documentation which seems to
work only
when connected to the modem port and I cannot find ribbons for it any
more.
I write papers and correspondence with my word proccessor. A
word
proccessor is a neccessity for writing for me as my spelling and
punctuation is miserable without it. I use the pay laser printers at
the
campus computer lab to print hard copies. I deal with several
listserv/majordomo lists by e-mail with my Eudora through the UNIX
based
campus system.
Mostly I am happy with my system the way it is.
Sure I would like to have a newer system, but I'm not going to be
earning
money any time soon and I have to make do.
Unfortunately the system on campus keeps being upgraded.
Commercial
service providers are already technically and financially beyond
reach.
My Eudora stopped connecting once already and I thought I was
banished from
Cyberheaven once and for all for having a slow modem. After about
six
months I was able to get the neccessary new script for Eudora to sign
on
to the upgraded system. It took this long, because most tech
support
people on campus I asked said it was impossible and advised I get a
14,000
bps modem. But to use a highspeed modem one needs to have System 7.x
they
said and for that I'd need a newer machine. Most people who are
smart
enough to be not bothered by steepish learning curves and who have
enough
money have little sympathy for dolts like me.
I am afraid I will not survive the next upgrade. Printing too, is
becoming
more difficult. I suspect the next upgrade of the "Wordstation" will
drop
MS Word in favour of some other word processor which will stop me
from
printing there.
So here are my questions.
1. Can the Classic's memory be upgraded and how far and what will
it
likely cost around Vancouver, Canada?
2. If the memory were upgraded would the beast run System 7.x and
which
one and how might one get a hold of it and install it?
3. If I looked for a used inkjet or laser printer, to run on my
system as
it is now, what should I look for and how much might it cost? (I went
to
a Future Shop, where the salesman claimed there weren't any printers
that
would run without System 7) I want reasonable black and white copy
and a
modest access to fonts including central european ones. I also want
a
machine that requires little manual dexterity to handle -- as I say,
I am
physically challenged.
4. Would I be better off to just save my pennies for a whole newer
used
system? If so, what system? Some friends advise me to go to a
Windoze.
The lower cost is tempting, but I sweated blood to learn to use a
C64, and
I head a fairly hard time learning this system and I dread yet
another. I
am afraid it will drive me crazy, I still haven't figured out how to
use
VersaTerm.
5. Any general advice you might have. One path I am considering
is
getting a printer ASAP, and maybe a used 9600 bps modem after. And
later
getting some more powerful used Mac, I'd really love to have CDRom.
But
what printer, modem, newer Mac?
I thank all of you in advance for any ideas.

This scanner needs the scanning application "AppleScan" 1.0.2 and
the
extension "Scanner" 2.0. Both these items are available from Apple's
FTP
sites. I believe you need Scanner 3.0 if you want to run the Apple
Color
OneScanner.
Compatability? All I know is that it runs on my IIvx and PowerMac
8500. It
is really ancient stuff, so it should run on a Plus. I paid $40 for
my Apple
Scanner (an earlier model), so you got a better deal than me!

I have just bought an old SE/30. I have heard rumor that it can
support an
external monitor. What size of monitor, color, grey scale or B/W will
it
support?
Does anyone know of a source for the the video card? Word
processing is not
fun on the 9" screen! I would like a larger monitor if its not to
expensive.

I've just inherited a 1 Mb Mac/floppy Mac Plus from the
haematology
department of my hospital and when it is powered up the sad Mac icon
is the
first and only thing to appear, with this code, 01E3BE and some
bits
cycling underneath the icon, it does this whether there is a valid
system
disk in there or not. I've looked in the TIL, downloaded the
TIL's
Diagnostics-The "Sad Mac" icon data file, read it but cannot make any
sense
of it whatsoever, is there anyone out there with the necessary skills
able
to make head or tail of these things.
Sad news. Your mac is reporting a very rare "Bad ROM" error.
Since the ROM
is soldered down to the board, it really is not replaceable. you
might try
disassembling the Mac just in case a piece of solder or something
is
shorting a trace. Good luck.
I just checked on of my Pluses and it's ROMs are socketed. Check
yours.
If they are socketed, try carefully removing each ROM and reseating
them.
Make sure to take proper static precautions.

What's the history of the machine (why do I see it in so
little
lists, is it a limited edition, is something wrong with it,
...)
The IIvi was apparently only sold here in Japan.
george
No, no, we have it in Denmark too. And as far as I know, nothing
is wrong
with it. They frequently appear as second hand in adds.
From MacWorld DK I have a list telling this:
Sold in Denmark from '92 to '93, it has a 68030 CPU, 16 mhz,
+68882 FPU.
Runs with system 7.1 and uses 30-pins SIMM 80 ns, up till 68 mb.
Should be
upgradeable to Quadra 650 and PowerMac 7100/66 mhz.
Well, that's what I know.

The ROMs in Macs are not usally soldered. The Plus has socketed
ROMs
which can be swapped with a 128 or 512 as an upgrade, this is what
may
have happened to your machine. They have to be put back in as a pair
and
in their correct sockets or your Mac wont work. If you can get a hold
of
another Mac Plus board then you may be able to compare them. The
ROMs
are the 0.3"x1.2" chips which have (C) Apple and a date on them and
may
be marked with a 'H' and an 'L'.

I just got the deal of the century through my high school: an
Apple //e,
5.25-inch disk drive, and very nice monitor (as Apple ][ monitors go)
for
***$5!*** (The "technology coordinator" obviously didn't know the
historic
value of the computer.) But even for the sake of background info,
I
digress...
I'm posting here because he threw in an Apple OneScanner free
with my $5
purchase, saying that "it's a great machine, we just couldn't find
software
for it." I figured he just didn't know where to look... :p Also, he
has
several 40MB hard disks that I could buy and use with my Mac Plus. So
the
questions:
1) What kind of software does the Apple OneScanner need, and
what is its
compatibility with, say, a Mac Plus or a Performa 6115CD, or anything
in
between?
The Apple Web site has the software hidden on it and your local
apple
reseller may be able to 'give' you a copy of the drivers.
