Generally it is easier to buy a new mouse.
Maybe one of the rebuilders will swap.
Somebody like Schrieve.

The device is kept together with screws.
The screws are on the bottom, under the label.
Generally the sprint is in the microswitch in the mouse.
I think they are soldered in.
Maybe RadioSHack can order one for you,
or go to a electronics store.

There are also many non-Apple 24-pin dot matrix printers that you
might consider, using GDT Softworks printer drivers and/or
serial-to-parallel cables, and System 6. These give remarkably good
output, particularly with fonts optimized for dot matrix use. I've
used an Okidata 393 with GDT's PowerPrint software and was pleased
with it.

Does anyone ever sell GDT used? Seems a shame to spend $100 on
software and a cable so you can buy a cheaper printer ... :-P

I recently recieved an offer for an encyclopeadia on CD-ROM. For the
system requirements it listed a Mac ][ci minimum. Is there any reason
that this program would not run on a SE/30.

From all i can tell the only differences are processor speed and the
color factor (which can be over come witha card).
Is there something else I have over looked?

Well, the IIci does have "32-bit-clean" ROMs and the SE/30 does not.
However, this can be fixed with Mode32/System 7.1 32-Bit Enabler, etc.
Sounds like you're okay with the rest of the differences ... Keep in
mind, though, that the encyclopedia may be assuming a 12" or 13"
monitor on the color end.

I too am wondering about this. I have a cd-rom that says it requires
an LCIII or later (which I do own). Why wouldn't earlier strong '030s
run it, like the IIci, IIfx, or IIvx?

I am looking to add an ethernet card to my LC II. We are using
10base-T (rj45 connector) with the normal 10 MBPS ethernet. It does
not have to be Fast Ethernet compatible. (For that matter, it can be
10Base2, if it would be cheaper!) Does anyone have any experience
with any of the PDS ethernet cards? From what I can tell, there are
three currently availible cards, all about the same price. They are
made by Asante, Farallon and EtherMac.

If anyone has any other suggestions, I would appreciate them. Or any
possible used cards that are availible. Small Dog Electronics
(http://www.smalldoggy.com) has some cards (new and used) but none are
LC II compatible.

Thanks!

Has anybody use ibmnet successfully ? I tried but pppdidn't work.
Consulting helpdesk@ibm.net their answer was they didn't have the Mac
sofware and suggested to get it from Apple Com. If anybody knows what
is the necessary sofware, please email me. The reason is simply my
company get rid of apple machine and bought peeceemachine and
subscribe to ib.net.

TIA Victor.

I know I've seen this posted before, but didn't pay attention 'til my
friend's Plus got the ole 'screen blackout' virus and started to go
black every few seconds. The only thing that'll cure it is to gently
tap the side of the case. Does it need a new power supply?

I have come into possession of two Mac Pluses that work was going to
put in the Dumpster. I hope to get at least one operational and use it
as web text machine. I know zero about Macs (well, only a little) and
have never been inside one or any machine. Here's what I've got, what
do I need:

One of the Macs is 4 Megs (says indelible maker on back).

If you can get it on, go to the Apple icon in the upper left corner
and pull down to 'about this Mac'. It'll tell you if there is really 4
megs inside.

The other ??. Have one power cord, one keyboard, one mouse with one serial pin
missing. No disks with it, though a friend sent me "images" of 6.0.5.

You need a keyboard cord to go to the Mac, a common phone cable works
fine.

The four meg Mac turns ? into happy face when I insert installer disk.
Churns, then does nothing. Happy face in middle of otherwise dark
screen. Disks do not eject. Paper clip works badly ... on both.
Pushing clip will raise housing; tweezer will then grab disk and pull
partially forward. With third hand, grab disk, pull about half inch
out, second push on paper clip then ejects disk.

You have no drive to install the disks onto. That's OK, I beleive you
can download a startup disc form Apple that you can use in the floppy
to run the Mac with no drive. ANybody out there know for sure?

The other Mac probably has bad power supply (guess). Get half inch
strip of light, top to bottom on screen. Can barely make out ? and can
barely see that disk insertion turn it into happy face, too. Also
churns, does nothing; same disk ejection problem.

You can get power supplies for about $15-20 online. Go to the for
sale newsgroups and scour for Mac stuff.

OK, where do I start, after I get the 10-inch TORX wrench needed to
break open the case? Or do I have bad set of disks? There are 5, named
Network Installer, System Tools, Utilities I, Utilities 2 and Printing
Tools.

Have no manual (yet). Have been told that if I can find cables any
modem (up to 9600 baud) will work and most any hard drive, if
reformatted for Mac.

Advice and suggestions would be appreciated.

4M is the max and highly recommended. Just checked a couple of Mac+
mouses and they are both 8 pins in a DE-9P so that's okay.

The four meg Mac turns ? into happy face when I insert installer
disk. Churns, then does nothing. Happy face in middle of otherwise
dark screen. Disks do not eject. Paper clip works badly ... on both.
Pushing clip will raise housing; tweezer will then grab disk and pull
partially forward. With third hand, grab disk, pull about half inch
out, second push on paper clip then ejects disk.

If the disk is the System Tools, it should work. At a guess you might
have problems with the disk drive. I'd suggest swapping it with the
other Mac.

The other Mac probably has bad power supply (guess). Get half inch
strip of light, top to bottom on screen. Can barely make out ? and
can barely see that disk insertion turn it into happy face, too. Also
churns, does nothing; same disk ejection problem.

I've seen this problem on a couple of Macs. The (for me) fix was to
replace a 3.6uF non-polarized electrolytic capacitor.

OK, where do I start, after I get the 10-inch TORX wrench needed to
break open the case? Or do I have bad set of disks? There are 5,

You can get other system versions at:

<ftp://ftp.apple.com/Apple.Support.Area/Apple.Software.Updates/US/Macitosh>

I'd recommend 6.0.8 at least. For web browsing you'll probably want
7.0 and update 1 at least.

Have no manual (yet). Have been told that if I can find cables any
modem (up to 9600 baud) will work and most any hard drive, if

Could I expect a MicroMac DiiMo '030 with pass thru PDS and a
RasterOps 264 video board to live in there comfortably? Space and
compatibility are concerns. (I have reason to believe that the RO
video board WILL support 7.5.5)

Have an SE/30 with MicroMac 030 and system 7.5.5.
Runs fine!

Have a Rasterops VideoCard: Color Board 264/SE30 (1989)!!!
Worked fine (not sure I had 7.5.5 at that time) to drive a 17" Sony
Trinitron.

BUT...

the cable connection from the video card, when mounted on the MicroMac
accellerator card, DOES NOT REACH the output space on the back of the
SE/30. It needs to be about 6" longer!

SO...

I'm still working on it.

Lotso' luck,
Philip
