I recently was given a LightningScan hand held scanner
with no software. I received the software which consists
of a desk accessory and an application as a result of a
previous Classic Macs post, but only the DA will work.
I suspect that the old software is not compatible with
System 7.5 which I am using on my Mac IIsi. If anyone
has more current software or know how I can make the
scanner work with the old please let me know.
Thanks,
Greg McNeil
P.S. The scanner was made by an apparently Defunct
company named Thunderware.

One of the buildings in our district has a neat Power
Mac 5200/100 Performa. I love it and use it all the
time to scan in pictures on an attached OneScanner.
They also have Adobe Photo Shop on board. The default
screen color has turned to a pinkish/purple and does
not change. All white areas are pinkish/purple and
sometime flickers to either a deeper purple or or more
pinkish pink. Resetting the color tints simply changes
to a different color be the default pinkish/purple
remains the same. My guess is that some type of
circuit filter or something has failed. A check with
our homepage shows the Gif Images made with the Mac at
www.tanet.net/~sunlib, are fine. Any ideas with this?

This is a common problem with the 5200 series. Apple
extended the warranties on these machines because of
this and several other problems. It took two trips from
the service rep the fix the problem on my Performa
5215CD. The problem stems, I am told, from corrosion of
the internal video connector. On the first trip, the
service rep cleaned the connector, which worked only for
a short while. On the second call, the service rep
replaced the cable and connector, which seems to have
cured the problem.

At last, for you Radius accelerator card fans:
Radius' site is finally well-organized and Mac-friendly, so
information
on full-page display cards and accelerators for machines all the way
back
to the Plus is easily accessible. The page for all Plus/SE Radius
accelerators (both the 16 and the 25) is:
http://www.radius.com/support/www/accelerators.html
This page explains all about ROM updates and accelerator software,
as well
as some FAQs about compatibility. According to their site, ROM
version 2.9
is the newest ROM version for the Plus and SE cards, and the
Accelerator 2.9
software is what goes along with it. The software can be downloaded
free of
charge from a myriad of places (listed at Radius' site) as well
as
ftp.radius.com, but the ROM upgrade, though apparently quite
available, is
not user-replaceable (according to Radius) and the Mac must be sent
to "a
Radius authorized service center" (a list of such places are
available
through a phone number) for removal and replacement of the ROM. I do
not
know how much new ROMs are, but a toll-free number is listed on the
support
homepage for asking.
Another icky issue is that, while on a normal SE you could run
System 7.5.5
or lower, you can run only System 7.1 max (on an SE--on a Plus, the
reported
limit is System 7.0!). As a final note, if you are having
compatibility
problems with an SE Radius card, hold down the mouse button as it
starts up
(the manner you would do if you wanted to eject an errant disk) and
when a
window pops up, put the switch for "Accelerator" to "Off." If you
have a
Plus, you're out of luck; you must physically remove the card to
disable it.
Good luck and happy accelerating,
Nathan Marler
Can you help me identify two Mac SE accelerator cards?
I recently found two used accelerator boards for my SE at a
very
interesting "computer salvage" store here in Atlanta. I didn't buy
them
because I couldn't tell what they were, and neither could the
store
because the identification labels had all fallen off. One board
appeared
to be a 68020 accelerator with math coprocessor and slots for 8
SIMMs.
It had two DIP sockets marked "ROM" but no ROMs were present. The
board
said "PN101" and it had a logo that looked like three cherries
hanging
with a leaf. The second board was similar, except it was marked
with
"Orion" and "Mac Peak Systems" with no numbers or logo.
I have four questions: 1) what are these boards, 2) would I need
ROMs to
make them work or would I insert my MAC ROMs into the empty sockets,
3)
would I need any special drivers to make these boards work, and 4)
what
do you think I should offer for them?
Thanks in advance,
John Crooks

Subject: More than one Provider in one Mac
Greetings,
I would like to know if anybody has tried more than one
Internet Service Provider in one Mac ? Had tried my
self, but each time ppp must be changed with the next
ISP's data or it caused a conflict or 'hang'. Is there a
trick or possibility to run more than one ISP without
doing to complicated steps.
Since I travelled alot, email response is highly
appreciated.
Tons of thanks.

Try TCP switcher it switches you tcp settings to the isp you want
to
use.And add a new isp on free ppp

30 mins, and one that lasts about 30 seconds, so I am
willing to experiment if necessary.
If they're nicads, try this: Put it in a Ziplock freezer bag, and
pop it in
the freezer for 1/2 hour. Take it out and slip it in the computer.
Turn on
the computer, and do (non-important) stuff until it dies. Then turn
it off
and back on again. do stuff til it dies. Keep this up until it
doesn't
even light up the monitor before dieing. Then repeat the whole
process a
few more times. This may help get rid of the memory effect.
Another
solution would be a conditioning charger, if there is one for your
battery.
I can sympathize -- I used to have an 18 minute train ride to
work, so now I
have an 18 minute battery. One of these days, I'm gonna do the
freezer
thing, but since I have 2 others, and three more on the way, I'm not
too
worried.

Is this true of other macs as well (like the II and IIci)? (Using

Does anyone have any info on: LINELINK 144E Modem

I'm looking for Modem init strings or any other info
available for this modem.
Id try "AT&F" or "AT&F1" (whithout quotes), they're
generic init's that
will connect many modems.

Well, "ConfigPPP" can take many different ISP's, and so will
MacTCP. Email
if you have questions. I used to do tech support for an ISP and love
Macs.
Also, you really only need one ISP to view the web, etc.. and you
can use
telnet to get email from all of your other accounts in the shell or
use
Claris Emailer which can fetch mail from a bunch of different
email
accounts at the same time. Hope this helps.

This is the original post, followed by a question from neon gooch
and then
my profound apology for making a small but critical error:
There were three versions of the 128K ROMs. The first
version was buggy, the second and third OK. To check
which ones you have, boot the unit, hit the rear of the
two "programmer's switches" on the side of the box.
(If you don't have a switch, get a little flashlight
and look into the grilles on the bottom left side of
the case - use a toothpick or micro-screwdriver to
press the rear button) You'll get a dialog box with
this prompt ">". If you get a system error, you have
older 68K ROMs.
Anyway, type DM4000000 and press "return". THe box
will fill with a bunch of code. Look at the top row,
second and third columns. If you see 4D1E EExx , you
have version one ROM. If you see 4D1E EAxx or 4D1F
81xx you have version two or three respectively. Type
"G" and "return" and you are back in Kansas. george
What do you type and where do you look? I typed that in
after interrupting and never found "4D1E" or "4D1F". I
pressed return several more times to see additional
windows of info and still never saw the first part
Sorry, I made a mistake. Type in DM400000 (only five zeros). You
should be
right as rain now.

I've just bought a Color Classic. 10/80, FPU, VRAM.
Nice. Are there any *cheap* booster cards with faster
CPU? 040 prefferably? And where to buy it. I live in
Poland, so UK or Germany would be nice. It is really
hard to transfer money from here to US without a credit
card. I do not have such toy... TIA
PeDrO
Greetings from South Africa,
I am also an user of a Color Classic 10/80 and really enjoy my
Mac. You
asked about an accelerator card for it. Well I have been using a
030-33
card by MicroMac since 1994 in it. It really makes a big difference.
At
one time I had thought about a 040 card but when I talked to the
folks who
make them they said that the bus speed on the CC was not fast enough
for a
040 processor. I have also tried a 030-50 accelerator that one could
place
an additional 16 mb of Ram on but unfortunately it never would
work
correctly. So after going round and round with it (not the
manufacturer)
for a couple of months the manufacturer took it back and refund my
money.
So from personal experience I would go with a 030-33 card, they
are SYS
7.5.5 friendly and Ram Doubler compatible. They are also very simple
to
install, just pull out the mother board and if you have a fpu you
have to
remove it and then place the board on the PDS slot. Reinstall the
mother
board and away you go. The card I use has no extensions or control
panels
to bother with. I bought mine through an American company
<http://www.micromac.com>
and they cost around $100 but I have seen them
also advertised in Mac magazines from England. Maybe some of the
fellows
who live in Europe can help out there.
Hope this helps.

I downloaded it from the Claris FTP site yesterday.
ftp.claris.com/pub/usa-macintosh/
in the sharware/freeware section.
David Buchner
I did it using my 6100 running Open Transport and O.T. PPP
I used to have to go into 2 control panels to switch the settings
from
isp a to isp b. Now you can use Location Manager, introduced with
7.6.
Since I no longer have 2 ips, I haven't tried Location Manager.
If you just wish to check for email on the second isp, you can do
that
from the first isp. Using Eudora. Just make start Eudora from the
second
isp settings file while connected to the first isp. And Eudora will
go
check your mail for ya. You can send from the second isp too.

You are maybe reading too quickly.
Public folder is needed if running Sys 6 on both Macs.
Nothing is needed if running Sys 7 on one Mac and Sys 6 on the
other. Or
if Sys 7 is running on both.
Mike
Load system 7 on the SE, or find a Claris freeware
product called 'Public Folder'. It transfers files
around macs in a relatively easy manner. It works with
system 6 and uses the Chooser so you can operate it from
within an application. You can get away with a simple
phonenet network or a plus to mini 8 imagewriter II
printer cable as the connection between the 2 macs.
PBJ
Maybe I just don't understand, but I don't know why
someone would have to root around and look for something
called "public folder." I recently hooked up via the 8
minidin Mac printer cable mentioned above, a Mac Plus
and a Power Macintosh 9500--the Plus running System
6.0.5 and the 9500 running System 7.5.5. Both
communicated via Appletalk/Appleshare just like they
should with each other and absolutely NO
incompatibilities!

LocalTalk is the physical network.
The software to implement networking over this physical network
has been
evolving. So the steps the user goes through have changed
accordingly.

Please forgive the dense question...
Do I correctly understand this discussion to mean that
all this fancy, no-brainer LocalTalk file sharing stuff
didn't really happen System 7? I never had more than one
Mac till after 7, I guess I just thought it had always
been as simple as install the file sharing and appletalk
extensions, plug 'em in, turn on file sharing, look for
servers in the chooser. No? How much different?
