I have a Mac LC, with 10 MB RAM, I have a Centris 610 with 8 MB
RAM, and I
have an external hard disk. If I startup both computers with the hard
disk,
RAM seems to behave differently. The same configuration (same
control
panels, extensions, fonts, etc.) run in the Centris uses for the
System
around 2500 KB, and in the LC it uses over 4 MB. I started up the LC
with
extensions off, and it is more than 3 MB used by the system alone.
What's
going on?
I thought it had to do with System 7.5, so I tried with System
7.1, 7.0.1
and even 6.0.8 (from floppies), and it always used over 3 MB. I
can't
understand how this same machine used to work fine with System 6 and
only 2
MB RAM. Any suggestions?
Check in your Memory control panel and make sure that your are
running
in 32 bit mode, also check VM and Disk Cashe settings. Settings
for
these are kept in Parameter RAM.

Its that you don't have 32-bit addressing on in the LC. Without
32-bit
addressing you can only use 8meg of ram, any left over is just added
to your
system memory, but not used. You need to go the memory control panel
and turn
on 32-bit addressing. and restart. Now the LC will have 32-bit
addressing
and all its ram. You could also use Maxima to get at up to 14meg of
ram under
24-bit addressing, or Optima to give system 6 32-bit adderessing.
Both of
these are from Connectix and most likely not available anymore.

Sounds like 32-bit addressing is not on. Find it in the memory
control
panel. I believe the LC is 32 bit clean, but if not, you'll need Mode
32
from Apple's ftp site.

Sounds like you do not have 32 bit addressing turned on for the
LC.
Check the memory control panel.
My LC (now retired) worked well in 32 bit mode.

Glancing through the archive I came across suggestion to use

I recently tried to use the EZ135 with my IIsi but can't mount

Various SCSI utilities (including Silverlining lite that comes with
the
EZ) see that the drive is connected, but the drive is unavailable
for
mounting. I am currently running system version 7.5.5 and think maybe
I
need to reinstall an earlier version of the system, but before I
hassle
with that, does anyone have any ideas?
Have you installed any extensions or control panels needed for the
EZ?
My Jaz drive requires an extension or a "Guest" application.
Removable
drives need some extra driver software to handle the remove part.
If
your SCSI cables are crappy, you could also have problems -- short
and
thick are usually what you want.
From what I've heard about 7.5.5, it works OK if you
DiskFix/Disk Doctor
your hard drive, clean-install 7.5.3, then add the update. I'm still
at
7.5.3 on my IIsi; I didn't see 7.5.5 as worth the extra hassle.
I also tried to hook up my old GCC BLP Elite printer to the
IIsi, which
I used to use with that si but, although when choosing "print" from
a
document it shows that the si is trying to print to the BLP, it
can't
"find" it. The Chooser does not show the BLP in its right-side window
for
selecting.
I have that exact same printer; works fine in the middle of our
little
network at home (with a pair of IIsi systems). Assuming you have
AppleTalk
turned on in the Chooser already, I'd suggest zapping the PRAM,
rebuilding
the desktop, all that voodoo. If you have the cables, try adding
the
PowerMac to your network, turn on file sharing, and see if your IIsi
can
find the PowerMac.
BTW, thanks to all who responded to my MacWeb query. I found
Internet
Config on a randomly-selected MacAddict CD. MacWeb seems to want to
lock
up on certain Web pages, though. :-( Maybe I should give it more
RAM....

Hi,
I use my Mac Classic II for game-playing for my 5 year old and
he
loves it. Recently I've discovered a treasure-trove of old games
on Jags site
(http://www.eden.com/~arena/jagshouse/classic.html)
**** THANK-YOU JAG!!!****
Anyway, we are running Sys7.1 on the Mac Classic II which only
uses the multifinder.
My problem is some of the older games crash. One of the games
said it had a known problem with Multifinder.
My question is:
Are the problems caused by Sys7 or the fact that the machine
is a 68030 with different h/w architecture???
Would it be better for me to install Sys6.8 and use the
original Finder??
I want to maximize what my son can do with "his" machine, even
if that means "dumbing" it down.
Any advice?

Hi, again folks!
I have a RasterOps 26430 24bit color PDS board for my SE/30. I
went to great
lengths to make sure this one would support OS 7.5.5. I have the most
recent
ROM chip (v1.3) along with the RasterOps Driver Patch 1.0, and don't
you know
this thing doesn't seem to sync my Applecolor High Resolution RGB
14"
monitor? We had it working for about 30 seconds, and then the pigtail
self
destructed. I bought a new pigtail, and here's what happens.... The
monitors
control panel recognizes the card, and gives me the appropriate 2
monitor
options, with 256 and millions of colors, and I can move my cursor
over to
the external monitor, but the ext. monitor stays black. RasterOps,
other than
selling me the driver patch software, was no help. For $50, and $12
for
return shipping, RasterOps will test the board and tell me if it
works, but
they also said they won't fix it. What gives?
Anyway, is anyone using this board in their SE/30 with OS 7.5.5?
Does it
work?
Do you all think this board got fried when the pigtail wires broke
of the
DB15?
If you think the output sections of the board got fried, can
anyone suggest a
place that would test the board and perform component level repairs?
Final desperation plan (before I buy a used real color Mac, and
turn this
into a print server): My friend has a Mac IIsi, which has an '030 and
PDS
slot. Can I pop this card into his PDS slot to see if it will
work,
indicating a problem with my motherboard? (Who knows what else I have
broken
on this one?)
Thanks, I'll summarize to the list, and copy Classic Macs.

******** I am close to deciding to turn my back on "the web."
Tired of
MacWeb crashing on my 68000 powerbook100. Tired of slow loading and a
flood
of Noise. Just started using TurboGopher, what an elegant and
spartan
arrangement, by comparison. I don't want to "browse" or "surf" -- I
just
want to look stuff up and GET it. Sadly, many of the gopherservers
seem to
have been shut down. I'd welcome anyone's up-to-date listings of
interesting Gophers. If I learned to write software, it would be to
come up
with an indestructably stable, text-only web browser. ***********
David Buchner
Oh Please do! A good stable text only web browser that doesn't try
to do
everything would be great. It should also be able to access pages on
the hard
drive as I find that to be the best place to keep your home page full
of
links. I don't see a need for it to try to translate everything
either, I
know how to launch stuffit expander or whatever. It does need to show
links,
this is needed for the more graphic sites, to get around in text. It
should
be very system compatable and machine compatable, even system 6 on a
Plus (OK
system 7.0 on a Plus if I must). Kinda' Fetch 3.0.1, but for WWW
pages
instead.

Remove the back of the case and you will see on the upright analog

that there are several monitor adjustment dials. You need a small
screwdriver to adjust these settings.
CAUTION:
One of the adjustments on an analog board CANNOT
be adjusted with a screwdriver.
If you try to adjust this setting with a screwdriver, it will get
hot!
It is a ferrite core in a coil.
You must use a non-metallic tool.
A kit of these tools is available at radioshack.
I belive it is the adjustment in the upper, left corner of the board.

Stopped in to a second hand store today and found a Mac Plus in
emmaculate
condition. It has been upgraded with 4 megs of memory, a cooling fan,
and a
reset button on the side. Also bought an Imagewriter 4 $9.00 I
cannot
believe that IDIOT that junked it. It is a beauty. All it needs is a
Mac
Plus compatible external hard drive. I will buy one in the next two
weeks.
Right now we are booting it from a floppy and it is a blow-you away
neat
surprise for a winterish, spring day and trip to the doctor. Also
interested in maybe upgrading it with an accelerator. Any ideas on
the
best/cheapest place for either the hard drive or the accelerator,
and/or
both. Thanx big time.

I am still in search of an external hard drive for my son's
MacPlus
1Mb. Would be very happy with 20 or 40Mb. Anyone?
Hi!
Time to make me heard on this the best list on the Internet!
The speed on my Mac II 8/40 19" modem is 33.8k as the MacPPP does
not
allow 57k. Anyone who knows why?
Now to my main question:
I bought a video card to my Mac and believed it was a colour
card.
The card is marked:
Radius Mac II TWO PAGE DISPLAY (C) RADIUS INC 1988 MADE IN USA.
A PROM is marked:
(C)1992 RADIUS INC TPD II V2.2 256K U8 297-0283-A
You don´t need to see me to understand a got quite mad when i
realized the
saler fooled me; it was a greyscale card...And I paid $140...
Anyhow the best thing is to install the card and my friend and I
tried that at
his job facility (Swedish Telecomm Company - Telia). But to my
disappointment the picture was very unsteady. One could hardly see
any
picture on screen at all. The picture rolled like an unsteady
osciloscope.
Is there a special driver software for it to run on a Mac II? A new
PROM?
Are there more owners of this card?
A would really appreciate help with this card!! Thank you!

For everyone who likes the shape and likeness of the SE-Style-Mac
(but
maybe do not have one themselves) there is an opportunity to have
a
"virtual" SE on their newer Macs:
I have turned my fathers SE into a QTVR-Object-Movie.
And it's on the net, so you can get it:
http://www.access.ch/mus/LocalTalk/OCH/9703/SE_zum_Anfassen.mov
For those not familiar with QTVR-Objects:
It is like a picture of the SE on a table, just you can turn the
SE in
any direction by clicking and dragging - just like you held it in
hand.
You will need the Apple QuickTime Plugin 1.1 (and QuickTime 2.5)
to view
it in your browser.
Or you can also download it from your browser and view it with
the
QTVR-Viewer-Application from Apple.
It won't run on 68000 Macs - but if you got one of them, you don't
need
it anyway :)

Sascha
Dear Classic Maccers
I'm sorry if this one is a bit to easy for many of you, but I've
looked and
can't seem to find a definitive answer.
What cable to I need to connect a normal Sportster modem to a Mac
Plus. Is
it just a standard mac modem cable? I'd heard that the plus has a
different
(DB9?) serial port and this needs a special cable.
Replies off list welcome.
Many thanks,
Saul
This may be really obvious, but I haven't found one so far... so
does
any one have a url/ftp/whatever to point me to something I can use?
I'm
working with an SE/30 8/160 here, and when ircle3.0b tries to use
itself
to play WAV sounds, kaBOOM! :)
Are old Powerbooks and pre-130 Newtons classic yet? :)
Thanks.

From: "Jones, Paul B"
The SE had the Easter Egg in the ROMs, not signatures. The ROMS
contain
pictures of the development team, I'll find out the magic codes to
type
in and post it to the list. The Mac Portable has signatures on the
base,
and the StyleWriter II has names inside the front cover.
PBJ
Actually there were different models of the SE.
SE vanilla and SE -FDHD (circa 1988).
The former had signatures on the back case and 800K floppies
and a memory resistor.
The latter had no signatures and 144K floppies
and jumpers for memory adjustment.
(Most had only one floppy.)
I know this from personal experience.
Bruce
As far as I know, there are three versions of the SE. The 800k,
the SE
FDHD and the SE SuperDrive. My machine is a SE SuperDrive,
purchased
from Sun remarketing a while back and it has all the sigs on the
inside.
I'm not sure what the difference between the FDHD and SuperDrive
SE's
was, it might have been just a slightly different production run.
Have you found the sigs on other Apple Macs? All my classic baby
macs,
the 128k, 512k, and the Plus are easy to find, but my newer mac, a
Quadra
800, has signatures too! I found them by accident one day. If you
have
a 800, 840av, or 81xx,85xx or 95xx, take a look on the white bit
of
plastic that supports your power supply. I know they're there in the
800.
Also, the Mac Portable has signatures in the case bottom. I'm yet
to
find sigs in ANY PowerBook.
If you know the locations of sigs on any other mac, let me know. I
think
i'll post a list on my website (or has that already been done?)
-Erick
[MODERATOR'S NOTE: My SE is an FDHD. So far as I know, the
SuperDrive was
the same thing in a later model with a cooler name. Either one has 1)
the
1.44MB drive, and 2) the ability to read MS-DOS disks with Apple
File
Exchange. But my FDHD has no signatures, as far as I can see (at
least not
on the removable part of the case).]
