I have a Powerbook 180 running System 7.5.3.
Even tho I have disabled the Caps Lock Control Panel, I still get a
sound
playing when I press the Caps Lock key. Is this now built into
the
System, or do I have to disable something else somewhere.
I don't have SndControl installed. The alert sound selected in the
Sound
CP is different than what I get with the Caps Lock key.
Any thoughts?

I say that only MacPPP 2.0.1 and InterSLIP 1.0.1 currently
work on 68000
macs.
If you have experience of other PPP variants with newer Systems
please
send me a note how you succeeded so I can update the faq.
After my post I unsuccesfully tried the following SW on a PB100, System 7.0.1*:
Sonic PPP (on PB100 opens the connection OK but soon crashes the
mac):
ftp://ftp.sonicsys.com//pub/updates/SonicPPP/SonicPPP_1.2_Installer.hqx
Commercial tcpCONNECT4 PPP (formerly InterPPP II) supports PPP and
SLIP, it
requires at least System 7 (v2.0.1 doesn't work on a PB100):
http://www.intercon.com/products/interppp2.html
LinkUPPP! (formerly FCRppp) supports PPP and SLIP (v1.1r1 doesn't
work on a PB100):
http://www.fcr.com/LinkUPPP/LinkUPPP.html
I got a note that MacSLIP 2.0.3 works. Also MacPPP 2.0.1
variants
v2.0.1cm4, v2.1.1SD and v2.1.2SD work so the updated FAQ concerning
PPP is
as follows:
Only MacPPP 2.0.1, MacSLIP 2.0.3 and InterSLIP 1.0.1 currently
work on
68000 macs (SimplePPP might work but I haven't tried it). MacPPP
2.0.1cm4
and v2.1.2SD are enhanced versions of MacPPP 2.0.1; 2.0.1cm4
enables
background dialing, for instance - MacPPP 2.1.2SD has enhancements
like:
fixes problem with Config PPP not being able to access it's prefs
file if
the Finder closed the control panel on a low memory error, terminal
window
is larger and scrolling of text off the top is a little cleaner,
shows the
115K and 230K rates in the Port Speed popup (and has 4800 as a
slowest port
speed vs 1200 on other MacPPP 2.0.1 variations). (Note that MacPPP
2.0.1
variations fail to redraw the PPP "up" symbols on screen (after the
1st
connection; no reboot between connections) unless you cover and
uncover
them with other windows).

I am looking for a chess game which actually uses a board (not
the
notation-type software) for my brother-in-law's Mac SE it has 4MB of
RAM
and I was mostly thinking PD or shareware...
Hi Bill!
There is a version of GNU-Chess which works on my fathers SE
(1.5Meg
Ram, System 6.07) so it should work on your brother-in-law's Mac SE
too.
The graphics are not so nice as in MacChess, but MacChess wants
the 030 :(
And mind you, GNU-Chess is pretty tough! :o)
Version 4.0 is in the Info-Mac-Archive in game/brd/gnu-chess-mac-40.hqx
Though right now I see that I tryed out version 3.0 ... hopefully
4.0
will work on the SE as well ...

Hello fellow mac'sters
I have a iici with system 7.1. I want to upgrade it to 7.6. My
question is, if I buy 7.6 will it be able to upgrade 7.1, or do I
have
to buy 7.5, and then buy 7.6?
Thanks for your answers:
Alan Nuzum
[MODERATOR'S NOTE: Alan: If your IIci is 32-bit clean, has 8MB of
RAM
(minimum--16's better), and at least a 68030, then you can upgrade it
to 7.6
by buying the _full_version_ of 7.6. The "upgrade" version, which
installs
on top of, rather than completely, will most probably only work on
7.5
machines.]

this is from MacOS 7.6 manual
System requirements
The following can install Mac OS 7.6:
computers with Power PC(tm) microprocessors
computers 68040 microprocessors
computers with "32-bit clean" 68030 microprocessors. All
computers with 68030 microprocessors are 32-bit clean except
the Macintosh SE/30, Macintosh IIx, and the Macintosh IIcx.
In addition, to install Mac OS 7.6, a computer must have a least
8MB of
RAM. If your computer has less than 16MB of bulit-in RAM, you must
use
Virtual memory.(Mac OS automatically turns on virtual memory when
you
install it.)

You are going about it wrong.
the analog board stays.
There is a screw or clip or whatever
that holds the disk carrier to the floppy drive.
Review the archives of this lists for how to replace an SE HD.
Same procedure for an SE/30.

Assuming you have already got into the case:
1. Unplug the floppy drive, SCSI cable and power supply cable from
the mother
board (the bottom board) I find it easier to unplug the power cable
from the
analog board, find the plug latch that you need to squeeze to release
the
plug.
2. Slide the mother board to the rear. There should be slots to
allow it to
drop down. Unplug the speaker plug from the mother board and the
power cable
if you did not do it in (1).
3. There should be four screws underneath that allow you to remove
the hard
drive and floppy in one assembly.
4. Reverse the above. You might want to check the battery voltage
while you
have the mother board out. Note, you will loose PRAM settings if the
battery
is removed from the board.
Good Luck, watch out for static etc.

Do any "Classic Gurus" out there know where I can buy a copy of
"Claris
Resolve"?
I need a stand-alone spreadsheet (I know I could get Clarisworks,
But I
already have MacWrite Pro, and FileMaker Pro) and I could buy
"Excell" but I
refuse to support MicroSoft with their "windoze" interface.
Sadly, I have sent over 10 seperate E-Mail messages to Claris
Corporation,
but no one ever replies. (...and I still love their software)
I know this is a discontinued product, but it would work
seamlessly with my
existing applications (including MacProject Pro). ...'anyone out
there know
where it can be found?
Ken Ballard
Not quite. Check Apple's web site for the OS at
http://www.product.info.apple.com/pr/press.releases/1997/q2/970107.pr.rel.macos76.html
for system requirements. You can use 7.6 on any 32 bit clean 68030
(meaning
a Mac IIci and up), but not on a SE/30, IIx or IIccx. All 68040's
will run 7.6.
The 68030 series gets abandoned after 7.6.1. 68040's and PowerPC Macs
will be
able to run 8.0 when it comes out this summer.

Hi there,
I've got a Mac 512K (that's what it says on the back) with an

floppy disc drive and an external 800K floppy disc drive.
What I was wondering was: is this really a 512K, or has it been

Any thoughts received with thanks,

A friend recently took her LCII in to a repair shop because it
was
making noises. The noises sometimes at start up would slowly climb
in
pitch and volume, until almost unbearable...There diagnoses was a
bad
HD....so she sent my the Mac to replace the HD. When I got it I
noticed
that the noise was coming from her speaker! The monitor always
started up
in B & W ( yep, dead battery ). I later was told that for the 2+
years she
had it,the monitor was always in B & W. I loaded up Techtool, I
put in a
new battery and zapped the pram over and over, the sound would go
away, and
then slowly comeback again...
I also noticed that the date of manufacture, normally shown in
Techtool,
was showing nothing.
The LCII has not been used that much and we would like to get it
working
properly again... There appears to be nothing else wrong except the
noise.
I have thought about just unpluuging the speaker. I figure if there
is
that much noise coming out of the speaker something else might be
happening
to.
Anybody have any ideas what is going on and how to fix it other
than
motherboard swap for aprox. $150.
Eagerly awaiting a solution....
Thank you
Steve
I've got a lovely old Portable, 9Mb RAM, 160Mb HD which I've not
used for
several years. Unfortunately, I've forgotten the password for the
old
DiskLock which is on it.
I tried creating a separate system disk with Primer HDT on it.
While the

just
keeps repeating.
Anyone have any other solution to accessing the HD to get rid of
the DL
program?

Mike,
You can't get 7.1 as a download; Apple stil charges for it.
You can get it on 800k disks form Sun Remarketing (http://www.sunrem.com).
They don't list it on their web site (use the web site to get
their phone
number), but they do have it in their catalog. They want $35 for
disks, either
800k or 1.4 MB, but no manuals. I bought 7.1 on 800k disks from them
for my
Plus last year and it works fine.

T.J.,
The IIvx also needs System Enabler 001, which is at version 1.0.1.
You can
download it from one of Apple's *many* ftp sites, under the
subdirectory (once
you are in the
ftp://ftpx.info.apple.com,
where x=1-9 or no character):
/AppleSupportArea/Apple_SW_Updates/US/Macintosh/System/System_Enablers/
Uncompress the System Enabler and put it onto the disk tools disk
(there
should be room on the diskette).
It could also be that the system install on the external drive is
missing
something else to be able to boot your IIvx, but the enabler is an
excellent
starting place. My guess is that you never put it on your disk tools
disk.
All the enablers also come on disk #2 of System_Update_3.0, which you
should
run after you install 7.1. It is also available on Apple's ftp sites,
under
the following path:
/AppleSupportArea/Apple_SW_Updates/US/Macintosh/System/Older_System/For_System_7.1.x/
Make sure you get the 1.4MB disk images file.

Subject: Mac IIvx Boot Problem =(
I am having a problem with my old Mac IIvx. I tried to clean

format the hard drive. Now.. when I tried to boot from the System 7.1
disk
tools or install disk it says that version 7.1 won't work with this
model

I even hooked up a good working spare hard drive with system
7.1 that I
used to use with an SE/30, and I get the same message.
Is there some additional startup disk I need to boot the IIvx,
so I can
re-install the system 7.1? Thanks for any help =)

A while back I set my mother-in-law up with an SE/30 and a
Mirror
full-page monitor -- if you recall they made the highest rated (and
at
times the _only_) external monitor for the compact Macs.
Well, the monitor is starting to dim. I'm not sure if that's a

problem (in which case I can't imagine that it's worth getting
repaired)
or something else, but I can't find a place to get it repaired.
Mirror's
out of business, the company that took over its assets seems to be

Any ideas?
